Re: what is adelaide like

Lived in Adelaide for two and a half years and sorry to say, did not like it at all. Yes there are places to visit, winerys, victor harbour, the hills, beaches, river murray etc etc but once you have been there, thats it in my opinion. I also did not like the climate in Adelaide, it can get far too unbearably hot in the summer (40 degrees plus for a couple of weeks is no fun ) and it gets pretty cold in the winter. Most houses have poor insulation (ie no double glazing, loft insulation), so you have to rely on either heating, cooling or owning a pool to cool off in (or go down to the beach) It gets to be expensive energy wise. We found it dull and boring, and returned to the UK over a year ago, and havent looked back since then. People say the UK is dull and drab, but I dont agree at all, there is more to do here and if you want to travel you dont have far to go, or can hop on a train, ferry or short flight to Europe.

We have now got dual nationality and if I ever returned to Aus, I wouldnt go to Adelaide. It would either be NSW or Queensland, but no plans to return in the distant future.

Exactly and very well said. Why Brits aim at SA and WA has the average Australian amazed, myself included (I'm English). It''s just a total lack of research before moving and why I just cannot understand

Bloody Hell, doom and gloom on this thread isnt there!!

We love Adelaide its a brilliant place to live, we did loads of research for the information of the poster that mentioned that! We also have many Aussie mates who agree with our decision to live here!

We have been here 2 years today (see my thread in the Update section), I think in my Opinion Adelaide is better suited for people with kids or older people I dont think as a young adult there is that much on offer here in comparison to Melbourne and Sydney, but I have no personal experience of that just an observation!

At the end of the day to listen to a few some what biased opinions on a Web site shouldnt be the way you make a decision about the rest of your life, I highly recommend a rekkie trip taking in a few areas, that way you get a better look at areas to make a more informed decision!!

Very true, also not much to offer for those in their 40s with grown up children. Boring and dull, dull, dull in my opinion.

Sorry, but I dont agree. We did that, and it looked good on the surface, but when you are living and working in Adelaide (and both of us did), its a different story. You are kind of 'trapped', well, thats how I felt. My older son was bored silly with little to do, the only thing that kept him going was a trip up to the Gold Coast (theme parks etc). Australia is quite an expensive place to live compared to where we are in the UK, and in comparison our lives are so much better here, with the odd trip to London, Amsterdam, Paris our night out in the local pubs. In Adelaide our lives consisted of boring bbqs most weekends and after a while it got really boring, same food, same conversations etc. Sorry, but you may find my comments doom and gloom but that IS how I felt about it. Its such a relief to be back in the land of the living.

I can't believe that there are so many negative attitudes on here. I was glued to this site before I left Aus and was as a result decided Brisbane was the way top go. Did all the research too... We arrived in Brisbane just as the storm season was about to start and the adds on the tele were asking me if I had the wood to board up my windows, cuppled with the unbearable humid heat and a tour of the neighbourhoods we realised it wasn't for us. e headed straight back to Adelaide and didn't look back. I know that others out there love it! I love it for holidays but couldn't live there.

When i lived in Adelaide i was never board! There are sooo many things to do and see and experience. To be honest though. I didn't move to Australia because I needed to be entertained and kept busy and, in my experience, the best thing that Adelaide did for me was slow me down, give me time to take stock of things and make changes in my lifestyle. That was exactly what I wanted to go to the other side of the world for in the first place.

I've waffled a bit (lol) so I'll try and get to the point...
1) you will never know until you get there because, after all, you are only getting the opinion of others and (it's a cliche but true) everyone is different.
2) I am 28 and newly married and loved it.... I'm not into clubbing but I am into walking, wine, good food and arts (all of which Adelaide has in abundance)

The best thing to remember is that Australia is enormous - i couldn't appreciate how big until i got there and that each state is different. I am sure that one of them will have exactly what you have in mind. But remember... you haven't experienced it yet and you're probably going to make changes not to find the same thing somewhere else...
Save up and do a tour of as many cities as you can. (We were luck enough to that and it was the best thing ever!)
Good luck to you :) I'm heading back to Adelaide in a couple of months having tried to re-settle in England after getting married. Can't wait to be back!

We've done a lot of research and it's where we feel we want to go. Not sure that the cold will bother us, but sure the 40+ will but it's not all year. As for houses, our plan is to build in the next 5 years. Less people move to SA than the other major cities so clearly it's not for everyone. Also, they have a decent soccer team.

Hi,

Thanks for your post. We are looking forward to moving to Adelaide and slowing down our life. We are not into clubbing either but all of your point 2:). Not really sure why I am posting this but want to say hello and we hope to be there soon.

Those heading out to Adelaide, good luck and I`m sure you`l love it.

If you get the right job/house etc everything else will slot into place for you, the beaches are great and the layed back lifestyle is lovely. If you base your bad opinion of Adelaide on the people you mix with and the looking for constant entertainment 24/7, I dont think that place would exist anywhere in the world, I maybe wrong,, I get bored in the UK aswell,,but thats prob not the UK`s fault its mine for not getting out & about a bit more. Suppose it depends what you want in your life, thats why some wont settle in certain places, you cannot generalize Adelaide, that it will suit say for instance mid aged or older ppl, My eldest setted very well and never got bored, but thats because she made friends easily and was embraced and invited out everywhere with her Aussie mates!

The point of my post was to reply to the title 'whats adelaide like' to which I replied. Nothing else, quite simple really.

Re: what is adelaide like

hi we have planned to move to adelaide early next year but people keep saying that it is quiet and boring there we are aged 27 and 23 can any body tell us what it is like
Adelaide isn't a terrible place....but yes its basically a small town and it is quiet, Im a good deal older than you and I can't wait to get away...probably a nice place for maybe a weekend, see the wineries etc then hot foot it back to civilisation!

But ofcourse it depends what you want, and what you are used to, if you live in a small cotswold village in the UK you might reallly like it....

Re: what is adelaide like

I have to disagree, the population is over 1.1 million, that's not a small town.
There is loads to do here, whatever age you are.
My daughter is 21 and is out all the time, has a much better and varied social life than she ever did in the UK - we lived 20 mins by train to central London.
It's also easier for her to get transport home after a few drinks in the city,a cab costs around $15 to $20 dollars. We are about 10kms from the CBD.
We are never bored, there is a lot to do here, you just have to get out and do it.
Great restaurants, some real good pubs, nightclubs, festivals, theatre a good lot of live music etc etc etc....

Re: what is adelaide like

Believe me I do get out and about, but another problem is that most people want to stay at home!

Also as an example a friend and I went into the city to celebrate Australia day, it was dead as a dodo, doesn't happen in Melbourne and Sydney.....

They say there is a population of 1.1 million but most of those people live in the vast suburbs and the city centre is often pretty dead at weekends....

Its not my idea of a city!

PS I fully intend to be proactive and move away!
