Hi Cathy
Welcome to Tassie.Regarding the wood buying.
You are in for a treat , a frost in Westbury, set against the backcloth of the Great Western Tiers , bright and sunny crisp and sparklingl.
To add to the good advice already on this thread, besides getting wood in before the price rises if you can buy in wood soon it will be drier and more easy to light and will burn brighter and hotter.Wet wood is a beggar to get going, tends to glow red, and emits more smoke up the chimney.
Store under cover, if you can, or cover over with tarpaulin ( thick plastic sheeting ) if left outside in the open.
There is a bloke on the main street in Westbury who sells "a load" at between $100 - $130 .
Also the Saturday Examiner has advertisements at this time of year for woodloads.Depending on the size of lorry/ light commercial you will pay more for the larger loads so a local with less travelling to do might be the way to go.
At least with the guy on the main road he parks with a load on board so you can see what you are getting.
Whether he offers value for money I cannot comment. I don't know him. I pass by on my way to Westbury and see the load and the price is always stated and the wood looks good and the right size to fit the average wood burner.Talk wood to your neighbour and learn about wood quality, price and price ratio to wood load size.
So if you can give it a go sooner rather than later.
IMHO use fire lighter purchased from your local grocery supermarket if you want it to light the same evening.Lighting with loads of newspaper and little sticks is for the brave and the patient....... know what I mean.
I use a wood burner too.
Cheers Oldgit

We live next door to the bloke on the main road!
$100 is the price for a truck load.
Where do you live then?

I asked someone I work with and he said people worked as hard (at Hazell's)as they needed to same as anywhere else. Sometime's people can have a bad experience and it taint's their whole view. Until you look at it through your own eyes you can never know.
Don't know if it happens in the UK but Aussie's love to get in your ear and put their worplace's down (experiencing this myself at the moment big time :curse: )

We had never rented before either.
We found a place (that allows dogs x 3) within a week.
We did not have jobs either at that time , we just showed a bottom line of our Westpac account proving that we could afford to pay 6 months in advance but it was not required.
There were LOADS of properties to rent - we saw this one 1st but then saw 8 others to check we were not being to hasty before coming back to this one.

I was going to say that it must have cost you a lot of money otherwise to send 3 over.... What types do you have? Dogs are one of the things i'm really looking forward to having when we live in Tasmania. I grew up having dogs in my family - we had loads - but since living with Andy and having the kids we have no pets because of us both working - and i didn't want to leave a dog on it's own for too long.... I especially like big dogs - but my daughter loves little ones... She's picked the name and everything for hers when she gets it!
and by the way it's a very generous offer of yours to allow people if they want to use your address/send stuff over in advance - shame you're not living in the South as that's where we're probably heading!

Did anyone in the UK still feel that earthquake during the night? Andy reckoned he did - i just slept through it!
Measured 5.2 on the richter scale apparently - and the epicentre was just outside of Lincolnshire....
I've been instructed today by Andy to check all the house for any cracks in paintwork etc seeing as the house goes up for sale in just over a week's time!!!

They are lovely looking dogs - especially the colour of their coat... They look like quite an energetic breed! Hope you have plenty of room where you're currently living!
I take it Kalti and Lyla are the two that you have in Australia with you? What have you named the other one?
One of my friends is going to Crufts this year - not to participate but to watch as she's been before and loves it. She owns a Newfoundland - massive thing - she's like a bear! But so soppy... a really lovely dog- although when the kids are near her - she towers over them!
My parents had a mixture of dogs over the years - mongrels, labrador, german shepherds, even a chihuahua once to name a few (the labrador and german shepherds were my favourites). They have a Jack Russell now though as my Dad finds a smaller dog easier to handle when out walking nowadays! We bred one of the german shepherds and kept one of the pups. We were very unlucky though as the Mum german shepherd who had a lovely temperament had trouble with her hips - quite common unfortunately in that breed. I think i'd like a labrador or golden retriever kind of dog myself....but again depends on how much space we end up having, especially as my daughter wants her own dog too - although that will no doubt be a terrier of some description!

Forgot to add that one of the very most helpful things was having and address and phone number to give to people before we moved. We used a friend and also sent 2 suitcases over in advance to her. It is a favour that I would be willing to do for other people too, it put us a step ahead ..

Nice to see you are settled nicely in Tas, with your beautiful dogs.
I was interested to read your post as we are still deliberating over whether to bring our Cocker Spaniel. Our concerns are the quarantine period, as she does seem to need a lot of attention!, finding a nice rental which will allow dogs, and where you can take them once in tas (I know the National parks are a no go area)
On the plus side, I think it would help us all to settle when we have picking her up to look forward to, and will certainly encourage me to get out and about more.
We do have some people who are really keen on having her, who already have another Cocker, so I know she would enjoy herself if she stayed here.
Its a hard decision, my head tells me she should stay in the UK, my heart wants to come with us. Hubby is not keen at all on taking her, so I really need to be sure myself or he'll never let me hear the last of it

Kids did'nt hear a thing - so I started to think I'd imagined it till I saw it on the news. We are in Melton - so quite near the epicentre here.
Hope you dont find any cracks in the paintwork! good luck with your house sale

Hi Carina, been watching stuff about it on the news - they reckon it's done loads of damage around the country. Cant see any cracks that weren't already there so we're ok

Just had some info back from one of the companies in the North that we'd enquired with about work for Andy. They said that currently their most senior tradesmen were being paid $22 an hour based on a 38 hour week...
This has shocked me a bit as that's still less than half of what Andy earns here for the job that he does....
We knew the wages would obviously be a lot less but didn't expect them to be this much less...
This also seems a bit lower to me than what we were advised when we visited the South back in November.... does anyone know if people tend to earn less in the North compared to the South? Seeing as Tax and what is it 9% superannuation? needs to come off of gross wages too - i'm starting to think that i might have to start looking for work as well once we're on the Island....
Could be that we'll definitely have to come to the South now if the wages are more....

e.g you have a job that pays $50,000 - you get paid $50,000 and your employer also pays your fund $4,500.
hope this helps.

If you're good at what you do sometimes you find yourself being paid more eventually anyway. We are pretty much back to what we were earning back in W.A. which is good because our mortgage is back to what it was back in W.A. too
