Thanks for the welcome Cathy.

We live in Bedfordshire at the moment and yes we do already have our visas. Actually we have had them for ages - i would be embarressed to admit how indecisive we really are!! We very nearly moved over this time last year but just as we accepted an offer on our house we had a family prob which made it so complicated to move that we gave up and decided to give it a year and then try again.

So a year later we are stuck in the position of trying to sell the house again - took two days last year but who knows now, the market has changed so much in a year.

We're not sure yet if we want to move to the north or south - as i said we're useless at making decisions so are hoping work and/or good schools will come along and make the decision for us!

We've been to the Island a few times (all the Balearics are family favourites), so it's nice to go somewhere familiar and instantly feel at home and relaxed (well as relaxed as you can with two kids!).

Sorry you're having miserable weather - but it's not that great over here either considering it's meant to be summer! We had one lovely day earlier in the week when it was quite warm, and then it's been cloudy, a bit miserable, windy and we had a few showers yesterday! Andy's niece and her boyfriend arrived yesterday (from Perth but had been staying with her sister in Abu Dhabi for a few days - hence why Andy's sister arrived last weekend as they've been staggering their arrivals at his Mum's!) kept saying that British weather is crap and i really wanted them to be proved wrong by landing when the sun was out - but no such luck there!

Keep working on Colin.....you never know - if i nag Andy for long enough he normally agree's to anything just to shut me up!

take care!
Cathy
HI yep i'll keep nagging .. i'm quite good at it you know ooo i've been to Alcudia lovely place have a fab time

pity the sun couldnt have put on a show for the expats, I had 3 phone calls from Perth yesterday must have been some psychic link going on and all of em said the weather was crap there too.

We are a family of 5 who hope to be joining you in Tassie later this year. We have been following this thread for ages and just love all the pics etc. We have been to Oz before but never to Tassie so it has helped our research no end.

We have 3 school age children - boys are 13 and 11 and a little girl of 5 - so wondered if anyone has opinions they would share with us on schools? That is a bit of an open ended question as we havn't decided where to live yet anyway!!

We also have a bit of a niggling worry about finding jobs. We have spoken with the Gov migrant assistance people who have assured us that we should be able to find work 'reasonably quickly' but we can't help feeling that it might not be that easy. Steve is a spray painter and i am a nursery nurse.

Any help and reassurance would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Anna
Hi Anna just wanted to say welcome. we are ooop north about an hour from Launceston, we havent any kids but if I can help with anything I will

Hi Anna

Welcome to our friendly thread

Hmmm indecisive hey? I know someone just like you and if she's reading this......you know who you are!!!!!!!!!! At the moment she's off with the fairies

Well I hope you have better luck selling your house than some of the others have on here As for schools I would say it's a matter of asking around when you get here, there are good and bad reputed same as Uk but it's not easy finding the information out here, as they don't seem to do any kind of comparisons like the UK, atleast if they do I haven't seen any reports. But what ever school your kids go to they will most likely go down a year. For instance I bet your 5 year old is in full time schooling now, well here she would be in her first year of school. My littlun is 4 and his birthday is in Jan, the school term begins in Feb, so he just missed out on Kindy. He will be 5 by the time he goes to Kindy!!!! A total bugger as he's sooooooo ready for school, the poor blighter is bored stiff. Before we left he attended pre-school 5 mornings a week and was due to start his first year at primary school.

As for finding work, I really don't think you will have a problem finding work, like Cathy said the companies here like to see you in the flesh before offering a position.

Where abouts in Beds are you from we are from round the corner in Bucks, MK to be exact.

Its good to have you onboard the Tasmania ship.

Hi Anna, we've had our visa's since last April - so we've taken our time making the move over. We were expecting to sell our property quickly - but when we put it up for sale about 5 months or so ago it was bang at the time the credit crunch was announced. We had viewers but no offers at all....
Properties where we live are not moving very fast...and there's loads now with "to let" signs replacing the previous "for sale" ones. We go on holiday for two weeks early tomorrow morning - but when we get back we've an appointment with a different agent and will try again. Really want to move this year - so fingerscrossed we'll manage to sell this time. Have resigned ourselves to the fact that we may have to lose a bit of money though, but it'll be worth it just to get on with moving...
Good luck with all your decisions - and i hope you have good luck with selling your house as well.

I've done the packing - just need to tidy up the house now! I'd had piles of stuff lying around all week!!!! Andy's dropped his beloved hanging baskets and tomato plants around a friends house to be watered whilst we're away (need them to be ok for when we have the next lot of estate agents pics done when we get back!)
I've heard the weather is pretty crap in a few places in Oz at the moment...
It made me laugh last night - we saw Andy's niece from Perth - although we've had a few showers and it's been cloudy here it's still been quite warm and a few evenings have been humid. She answered Andy's mum's back door wearing jeans, a jumper and a body warmer!!! I think it'll take her a while to adjust to the UK temperatures! She was about 5 when they moved to Perth (now 24) so she's in for a BIG shock when they're still here come winter!

Hi Kerry i still have trouble getting my head around the fact that Eden will go back a year when we arrive. She's reading / writing on her own now having finished the 1st year at school - and i guess she'll go back a year and have to start over on certain things again with the other kids. One of the reasons i really want to get over this year though is that she can have a bit of time off with me and jared then before starting a new school year come
Feb 09.
We had Eden's 1st school report which was really good - apart from her absences for the year! they included the 3 weeks we'd spent in Oz!!

Anyway, i'll say bye for now - will no doubt check the thread whilst we are away....so everyone keep up with the questions / chat etc as i love reading it!

ADIOS AMIGO'S!!!!

Take care

It'll be more like me stressing that Jared is going to jump in the pool all the time - not too sure about the relaxing bit as yet!
We did say perhaps we should get a retractable dog lead to attach to his reigns - but decided against the idea (alongwith the idea of getting one of those spikes to stop him wandering off on the beach ) Fingerscrossed he'll be an angel for two weeks (might be wishing too much there!).
I'm sure some of it will be relaxing - and a hell of a lot better than being home here in Romford!

I'm sure i can manage the odd drinky and paella for you - would be rude not to seeing as you've asked me to eh?

you take care!

Going back to Majorca again - mainly because of the lovely short flight - plus
we love the Balearics anyway... Roll on 20th July when i can escape Romford for a fortnight!!!!
Below are a couple of pics of the Hotel i've booked which is beachfront - which suits us down to the ground seeing as we're all water babies!

Now i'd better start that diet pretty pronto - seeing as i'll no doubt take advantage of the All-inclusive food / drink whilst i'm there and seeing as i'll have to face the world in my cossie everyday!!!!
Hi all. We are looking at Tas. I am a spark. There is my wife, three year old daughter and me.

Was hoping for a nice life, outdoors and less people. We were acceped for NZ then thought it was too expensive. Would Melbourne be better than Tas? Has anyone gone skiing in Tas, how bad is it?

We do get snow on the high ground, in the mountainous parts of Tas but not in your average built up areas. Tas is very out doorsy with lots of water sports and fishing. There are loads of public parks equipped with free barbies to use. Personally never been skiing here but I believe there is a ski resort somewhere in the Highlands, but not sure where.

How much more expensive is it to go to NZ then? I would have thought it would be the same. You will like melbourne if you like the city, but the houses are a lot more expensive than here. If you like less people then Tassie is def the place for you with a population of around 650,000 peeps on the whole island you can't go wrong!!

Small world Kerry - we live inbetween Bedford and MK! So usually go to Mk for shopping as its much better. We both used to work in MK too.

Have read the info on the education Tas site and i may be a bit slow but i can't figure out which school year my children will end up in so was interested that you think they may go down a year. Actually they'll probably enjoy that anyway! My youngest has just finished her reception year which was full time - she will be 6 just after Xmas so if we arrive this year i guess she will join in the end of the first year again????

School hols start here this week so the kids and i have 6 weeks to look forward to now. Just love it when i'm on holiday and Steve has to work!!

Hi all

Quick update from Tas.

So far, so good, we've found a nice to rent in Blackman's Bay, the children started school which went Ok apart from my daughter throwing a wobbly about the uniform (which is pretty awful although I can't tell her that!)
Hubby starts work next week at the University of Tasmania, had another job offer as well which was fantastic to have a choice of jobs.

We have been out and about, visited Bonorong Wildlife Park, went on a fab cruise down to Peppermint Bay, had snowball fights on Mt Wellington, eaten too much!, visited a great winery, been to Mt Field National Park for the day (although we only did the tame bit!) and generally finding our feet here.

Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming, the sun has shone most days even if it is cold, and we are looking forward to our life here.

Back online again now, so will be back soon.

Totally fab post , Sam

I'm so happy for you.....it all sounds amazing

Hope the kids settle in to school as quickly as possible, both for them and you !! I would be really stressed out with all the new 'Starts' but it sounds as if you will love your new life in Tas and with any luck we'll be there in a year or two
We are pulling out all the stops with this house to get it ready for selling (Again!!:curse as Jerad does all the work we might as well make it as saleable as possible.......without it costing very much.
