Tasmania??

Hiya,
Just saw this thread and thought I'd duck in to say I"m a Tasmanian born and bred .. spent the first 17 years of life there and shot off the mebourne as soon as possible.
Plusses - It's the most beautiful place in the world, and its ideal at either end of one's life - safe for small kids and relaxing for older adults
Negatives - kids in late teens will be bored, especially if they're from england!
I'd be happy for anyone to pm me if they're heading to Hobart especially...

Hi Carina
Not yet in Tas, so don't know about schools from any first hand expereince but we know a couple who bought a house in Tas last year and they have managed to find out a few bits for us.
Taroona and Kingston High School came out well recommended, our children will be in Primary School, Grades 4 & 6, so contacted some of them, most have quite strict catchment area rules, particularly in the Taroona and Kingston areas due to the population growth of those areas, so Rosny Park would be no good to live if thats where you wanted the children to go and they still have the catchment rules. Although I have only contacted the Primary Schools so far, High Schools may be more relaxed on the catchment boundaries?
I marked on a map all the places we like the look of and then contacted all of the schools, they have all been really helpful, but until we know where we'll find a suitable rental property, we obviously can't make any real plans.
As I said, we are not there yet, so hopefully, someone else might pop up with more info.

Hi Carina
Crikey - less than 3 weeks before you leave! That's come around quickly! How exciting
Good luck for your leaving party.....I'm sure you will enjoy it - and i hope it's really great having all your loved ones/friends etc there - and that it doesnt become too upsetting at the end of the night
I must admit that is one of the things i worry about come the time when we finally leave. I reckon i'd be getting through a box of tissues at the end of the night...or just getting drunk to get through it! I've already told my closest friends that we're to pretend it's a birthday party or something!
Dont think i'd risk wearing mascara of any description that night though!
I'm just going to keep saying to myself and the people i really care about that it's not goodbye forever...
I hope you manage to find out the info you want about schools... We're still undecided on an exact location - and i want to be able to walk my daughter to school when she starts next year - so i wont be looking too much into schools until we actually arrive and decide on an exact area.... But i'd be interested to hear if you find out about any particular schools that get a really good write up. I have heard the same thing about Taroona Primary before myself...
Anyway, i hope all your final arrangements go smoothly - and take care of yourselves.... I look forward to hearing any updates you have!

Hi guys, have been following the threads sliently for a while now, saw this one and thought I could help out. You have to live in the catchment area to enable your child to go to school in Tasmania. If your hubbie is looking at a job in Rosny Park and you want to live in surrounding areas, I can highly recommend Lindisfarne where we were for 6 months, its such a beautiful area. There are two schools in this are, Lindisfarne Primary School and Lindisfarne North, my kids went to Lindisfarne Primary School and I can highly recommend this. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your great info on schools, I was looking at the Lindisfarne one on there website, so its great that you recommend it. It seems a nice area around there from what I can gather. Are you back in the UK now ? - sorry I've lost track of everyone's move, as I dont always read all the threads

Thanks again

Hi
Have you had to resort to a weekend shopping trip to Melbourne yet?
Is there really not many decent shops in Tas?
I've heard it's quite reasonable to pop over to Melbourne for a long weekend.
I quite fancy the idea of being able to do that when i'm living in Tas....
Some friends are hoping to come to Australia at the end of next year....and i'm hoping that i'll get to meet them whilst they're in Melbourne - if i cant persuade them to pop over to Tassie!
Maybe once i am over - and once i'm settled, we'll have to arrange a weekend of retail therapy for those needing a fix and for anyone who's interested - it would be a good way to get to know everyone better!

I am a speedy typer - have to be in my job to get through the number of Emails i receive/send each day!!!
I'm sure your party wont be as bad as we're all envisaging our leaving parties to be! I think Andy my OH wouldn't be that worried if we didn't have one, but i know how upset our friends and close family would be if we didn't....he would happily slip away during the night if he could!
I just hope when our time comes that we have sufficient time to organise something! So are you having a stopover in Singapore? I remember a while back you mentioned places to stay on a previous thread. If so, have you been there before ? It's a lovely place - and if you have a day or two there and want to get out and about - everything's so accessible. I actually spent time on my own in Singapore and felt really comfortable there, but i did all the touristy things like Sentosa Island, the Zoo, the birdpark, shopping, visiting Raffles etc etc....before leaving to go to Malacca and doing a tour of Malaysia.
Anyway, make sure you keep us all posted with how things are going when you get there....(well once you're able to that is!)...

I agree that it must depend on the individual and what they're into. Your girls have always done a lot of clubs haven't they? I think if teenagers can occupy their time then they're normally fine - it's when they get bored that the trouble starts! I'm sure your 18 year old daughter probably wouldn't want to be referred to as a teenager anymore though!

How are things anyway? have you been out and about taking any pictures during the last week ?

Hello MelbournecityRach!!
We knew about the teenage thing before we came out, but our wee nipper is only 4, so we have quite a few years before he becomes starry eyed for the bright lights of Melly!! It is something that we have discussed and decided we may move to the mainland later in life. To be honest I think by then I'd be gagging for a decent retail fix by then anyway

I'm glad to hear those spider sprays do their job!

Do none of the houses have central heating in them? or just a few?
Electric heaters etc would pump up the old electric bills but i guess it's better than freezing!
How does Alex react when he see's any spiders / scorpions? Just curious as Eden when she was younger used to be really interested in bugs of any shape or description - but now as she's getting older she's getting a bit squeamish - and gives a girly shreek if anything buzzes around her!
Jared on the other hand is still at the "it if moves i'll try to pick it up" stage....which i dont worry about here - but i think in Oz i might find it a bit worrying!

Hi Peter - we missed you! Welcome back. We did have a day recently when we couldn't access BE but thankfully weren't as unlucky as you. Glad Pollyanna got you back on the site ok though
Thanks for all the info about the private health stuff. I imagine i'll do what you suggest and wait when we arrive to see whether i feel we need private healthcare or not. I will bring my current bupa membership details with me though as i've been a member for more than 15 years now - so you never know it might mean something!
Your dogs are lovely - especially the old fella by the gate....He's the kind of dog i love....a face full of character. How old are your dogs?
I hope you've had a great weekend... The rain finally stopped about mid-day here - but it's a bit humid still - so i reckon we'll see more rain before the day is out. Going to visit a friend after we've had dinner - Eden is so excited as it's like visiting a mini-zoo at her place. She has two dogs, a giant rabbit, guinea pigs, two large avaries with too many birds to mention, parrots, tortoises - and until recently also owned a chameleon but she doesnt have that anymore.
Her husband - our close friend Pete died of skin cancer a year ago aged only46 so we're going round there to not just see her but to remember him as well. I dont know where the last year has gone really ... The one good thing about kids though is that the mood is never down for long - especially with my two who are turning out to be a mischievious pair!
Anyway, i'll say bye for now!
talk to you soon. It's going to take you a while to catch up on the threads - just reading them - let alone replying to them all!
take care

Hi Peter
Glad you've managed to get BE working again! Sounds like you had an awful time after your garage accident.... Hope you're more careful now when it comes to lifting anything!I thought your dog nearest to the gate might be about that age, some dogs have that "i've been about a while" air to them!
Hope you've had a good weekend....i've been pretty busy this weekend - hence not having had a chance to go on BE for a couple of days!

Andy's doing his good samaritan bit today though - he's off round my parents in an hour's time to paint their dining-room and living room ceilings (quite big rooms) for them.....so i might be nice and have a roast dinner waiting for him for when he gets home!

Hope you have no more problems getting into the site!
take care
talk to you soon

Seeing as the house hasn't sold yet - we have decided to go on holiday. Whilst Andy's been out this morning i finally got the chance to sit here and find a holiday....
Going back to Majorca again - mainly because of the lovely short flight - plus
we love the Balearics anyway...
Roll on 20th July when i can escape Romford for a fortnight!!!!
Below are a couple of pics of the Hotel i've booked which is beachfront - which suits us down to the ground seeing as we're all water babies!

Now i'd better start that diet pretty pronto - seeing as i'll no doubt take advantage of the All-inclusive food / drink whilst i'm there
and seeing as i'll have to face the world in my cossie everyday!!!!
