With NSW, I felt having to stay in Sydney for at least 7 months before you can move to an area that you wanted (that's only if there was a vacancy) only delayed settling down and calling it home. Plus trying to find accommodation or the main issue, trying to sort out your driving license! But I did like the look of Tweedshire, up North.

Yes mate. QLD offered more support,i.e. they collected us from the airport, provided an apartment, 3 months rent free, gave a buddy who took you around town getting your documents sorted etc. But the main thing was I got a posting of my choice.
That all sounds very nice John. Don't know if that initial support would be enough to make me want to work at ACP level though. I know people will say that it is the lifestyle etc. etc. but at the end of the day, I think I personally would get very frustrated having to give up skills and take such a big pay cut for the pleasure of Queensland.

The reason you have to stay in Sydney is to achieve ICP status or Specialist Paramedic since the recent job review and subsequent 15% pay rise. Although this does not give you the ultimate luxury of maybe starting where you really want to be, you do get a base station and the chance to transfer. The driving licence is only an issue if you're coming on a Temp visa. Otherwise, it's a day spent driving around and hopefully you pass. This costs $700. The training college at Rozelle offers accomodation.
Anyway, we all make different decisions for different reasons. Just hope I am happy with the one I have made!

For me it was pure life style, after 17yrs the fact I'm not allowed to intubate or give a few more drugs is no hardship, its all there if I want to do 12 mths distant learning and get a degree. Pay is slightly different LOL but surving quite comfortably on $60K.
I wake up with a smile and go to bed smiling, I'm living in oz and won't ever experience a winter again

Lodged my visa application today. Had the medicals and x-rays last week so hopefully will get the visa granted within 4 weeks. Due to start the induction on the 16th March.

That was quick! How long did it take to get an appointment for the medicals?
I'm going to send ASNSW an email later today. I've not heard anything since my interview in Nov. I know my references were sent back late Nov. We had talked about the May induction at interview so I hope they haven't forgotton me lol!

Visa Application sent yesterday with all police certs and certified documents. etc. It is sent to Parramatta where they only deal with Employer sponsored visas, so as long as there are no probs with medicals and you have supplied all the supporting documents, a visa grant can happen well within 4 weeks.
You can have your medicals/x-rays done before you submit your visa if you want. Mine cost £820 for 2 Adults & 2kids age 10 & 7. Kids under 11 don't need x-rays. Visa application is $1420(£675) which you can pay by credit card on the application form or by banker's draft.

When I phoned them, I was told that I should e-mail them with a date to start which I did. It was only then did things start to really move. They submitted their nomination mid December and I had my RPL certificate and job offer in the post a few days later. They also gave me lots of guidance on filling in the visa application. Xmas period slowed things down a bit. Had a 2 week wait for the medicals and x rays are no problem as they only take 2 mins. Had the medicals on the 7th. Blood results take week or two to get back to them. If all OK they post them to Sydney.

Not sure who you guy's are emailing but the best people are Mishka Griffiths and Calista Bryan oh and Elizabeth Ambrahams, these guys know the dates and make things happen. I'd fully recommend getting medicals done prior to sending the visa application in as they last for around 6months or so. Keeps the ball rolling. It's a bit nerve wracking though as you can track them via Post Office until they get to Australia then you kinda have to cross your fingers.

hi swigski
we are currently going through the application process and have submitted our references and prpreferredtart date. we are now thinking about medicals and x-rays. i notice you have already done this, where did you go for the medical? was you told by nsw which practice to attend? or did you arrange it yourself?

Hi all. I'm Phil, new here. I've been a Para just over 3 yrs with NWAS in Preston. Applied for ASNSW mid Oct '08. Haven't heard anything back yet. E-mailed last week just to check my application had been received, but still waiting on a reply. Have a few Q's, if anyone can answer, i'd be grateful!
How long did you have to wait after submitting application?
Application form asked for choice of temp/permanent residency, do you get permanent easily?
Does having extra qual's stand you in better position regarding shortlist for interview etc? e.g Decon training, USAR, HART, mentoring etc
Been over to QLD last year to meet up with an ex colleague. So it's a choice of QAS and ASNSW at the mo!!

Hi Phil, I waited a while before ASNSW got back in touch with me. As you have 3 years experience as a Para, you will get Permanent residence if you apply for it (and are successful throughout the recruitment process). A requirement of the permanent residence visa is 3yrs+ post qual experience....Tech doesn't count. If you have less than this, you can still apply but only for temp residency until you have 3yrs+ experience. ASNSW will then re-sponsor you for permanent residency.
All your quals will be taken into consideration but all they need is IHCD/ Uni Para Quals + State Registration to gain equivalency at ICP level. Anymore is a bonus so list everything! As far as I know, only a slack handful have gained equivelency as ICP with Queensland.
Good luck!
