Why do they go through every box for self packers but not if you use a packing company?

In theory:

because there is more chance of them finding something that souldnt be there if it was a self packer - the companies are supposed to know what they are doing - so Aussie customs think anyway.

Several people have brought it out - a search might turn up something. 232bar and Cresta57 have brought dive gear, they may have posted on it.

We packed all our rattan & wicker (which included a couple of chairs), decided to take the hit if they get mean although the packers, ahem, may have mislabelled them. ;)

So sealed chocolates/biscuits tins and tea bags are fine  I checked out the website that Pollyanna quoted - but just double checking with everyone (Tea and Chocoholic :o)
Thanks

Cheers Pollyana. My sister is craving Cadbury's Roses so can bring her over a tin without worrying. :)

OK that was a flippant answer, and I am a lazy bugger, and we didn't pay for the packing/shipping ourselves, BUT honestly, there is no way I could have packed as well or as tightly as the UTS boys did.

We were borderline, they threatened us with a 40ft container for which the company wouldn't pay (and we were going to have to pay the extra 5k Sing $)), but those guys can do magic with a piece of cardboard, and they packed stuff like Russian dolls, not an inch wasted. They also took great care, protected handles, etc., all things I wouldn't have thought to do.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when the mattress went in last and the container was sealed up with literally 6" to spare. They earned their tips.

Re: NO-NO's for the container

we shipped with crownrelo and we've just been told that everything in the 20ft container was cleared by quarantine with no probs.

in there we had:

a dirty hoover(this was accidental - it was used right up until the last minute and rushed into the container

sun chairs and loungers with rusty nails

wooden outdoor table and chairs (which i forgot to declare as forgot we had them!!

3 bikes with cleaned tyres (but still little specks of dirt)

i do believe, that quarantine can be fussy but it stressed me out when we were leaving, worrying about things being destroyed etc

maybe we were lucky:confused:

Re: NO-NO's for the container

We are also shipping our furniture out and are having it delivered to Melbourne Port. Anyone know what kind of costs are involved after that (besides delivering to next house?)

Is there an entry charge? Charging for demourrage (Sorry for spelling, but talking about the gassing thing), handling the container, etc

Any advice would be great.

Also, how long does it have to be in quarantine. I've heard some people say up to a week. We're hoping ours arrives - gets done - and can take the following day or so.

Thanks in advance,
Irish Gal
