We self packed , self shipped and self cleared through customs and AQIS.
Not a single box was opened. The AQIS guy looked at our list , which was very detailed , then asked a few questions about where we got wooden items from , then signed off without checking a thing.

True , mate i have been in this game for 30 years , you have done the right thing, and are lucky , but i think you dont realise some of your box,s have been checked, check the tape colour.........:Dmm

Can you take untreated wooden furniture:confused:

Can you explain "untreated"? If it is commercially-made furniture I would think it is treated in some way. If it looks like it just got hacked off a tree, you will have problems.

Looking way back up this thread to see why I am subscribed, I see I mentioned my outdoor furniture that I'd aged all the stain off. That would have had problems, according to the shippers, so I had to re-stain it, and I didn't even try to bring the lounger that had a small amount of rotten wood.

edit: I am however pleased to report that the wicker erm "office chairs" made it through ok. ;) As did all the other wicker and the wastebin still complete with rubbish. :D

The only box that was opened was the box of shoes that came as part of our air freight.

(We have a LOT of wooden furniture and artefacts, all bought in Asia.)

Hi all

We are booking our container with PSS International, and we have 2 large hand-carved wooden carvings (that we lugged back from Thailand a few years ago), which the removal people think will not be accepted. I really want to take these. If the AQIS people decide that they need to be fumigated will the whole container be done or just these items? and how much does it cost?

Also my OH has a motorised skateboard (!!!) and PSS are saying we require Import Approval. I have emailed the customs in Oz but not getting much joy, (I have a receipt for my email but no answer)

Any thoughts?

Can't answer your specific questions but most of the furniture and ornaments we possess are wooden and from Asia (we were living there). We had no problems whatsoever, although I did remove some rice seeds from the surround on a teak mirror (that's probably mentioned somewhere above, I was whinging no end :D ) and re-finish my outdoor set as it looked too raw.

We brought a motorised ride-in car over for our kid and we didn't need import approval for that. Worth checking out to be absolutely sure though.

They will generally just fumigate/destroy the items concerned.

PSS are talking bollocks. We have just brought in our container and on it was my motorised scooter, and two kids battery operated cars and it was fine.

Incidentally, we had 315 cartons and boxes (a full 40ft container), and customs opened 28 of them.

PSS...

Let's just say the insurance claim has just been made, although it is hard to know who to blame... but a lot of items incurred damage.

This may help as you do need import approval for certain scooters and motorised vehicles. I have attached a link from the Australian Government Infrastructure website

For help with Quarantine, see link

Thanks for the links peg19.
I have now received a reply to my email and have filled out the relevant form and sent it off. Just have to wait and see if they give us approval.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that we have a 'nice' customs person and they don't decide to destroy them. I am willing to have them fumigated though, so we shall see.

Thanks slipshot, I just hope that PSS don't damage too many items.

To be on the safe side I have applied for Import Approval. (Hubby would be devasted if they didn't allow the skateboard through!!)
