so far we have: no foodstuffs no animal products no wicker/banana leaf products no horseriding equipment (well we can take it but it will be subject to a hefty fumigation fee and delays on the other end) No plant materials (cones in Xmas decs apparently a huge no-no) No dirty shoes No dirty vacuum cleaners No dirty bicycles or sporting equipment We have heard that the following cause issues: Xmas trees (my mate just had to pay to have hers destroyed) Please can I have all your hints and tips for packing so that we can avoid unneccessary costs and delays on the other end. No candles are allowed apparentley, but to be honest all my candles arrived ok, even my wicker got through and Xmas tree. Must have had a nice customs guy sorting my things;) |
Re: NO-NO's for the container
UTS said candles are ok but I read elsewhere that it depends if they're natural beeswax (no-go) or cheap artificial Ikea rubbish like most of mine (ok).

They don't open all the boxes. Make it clear which boxes have declarable stuff in, and there is a higher chance of them opening those, but they still won't necessarily look at them. Generally you can tell the ones they'vce opened as they will reseal them with differnt tape.

Providing you clean the tools and fishing stuff of any mud or organic material you will be fine. We went a bit overboard with cleaning tools but hubby wanted them and decided it would be a good time to give them a damn good clean so he removed all rust, polished them, oiled them and even painted some - bet you haven't got a hammerite gold spade
Bring the fridge if it's a newish one (CFC free), and the plasma tv - they will both work fine. If you're bringing a container, fill it with everything unless you love shopping and want to spend the first month traipsing round shops looking for potato peelers, sofas, beds etc. I must contact Whirlpool and ask about our fridge. Also, what would people recommend we use to clean the fishing equipment. Must start preparing some of the gardening equipment. and double check the kids toys. Regards Silverski |

Don't forget old teddy bears! Mine is stuffed with straw and cost $100 to be irradiated before they'd let him in. I brought a load of shells (declared) but there was a bit of coral in with them (I'd forgotten) and it was confiscated.

What a useless bunch of pillocks? Which removal company did you use? They should never have told you that about the beanies - it's only polystyrene! Never considered not bringing ours although I think I wanted them more than the girls but then I probably paid for most of them :D Shame about the other bits though, must be luck of the draw, we only had a bike opened and then sealed up again but the boxes packed by JM all had a wad of brown paper at the top to protect the contents.
Also on the day they had not brought the packing material for the big items that was specified. |

What's the story with the "no candles" thing.
Is it really NO candles, or just no candles that have leaves and twigs and seeds and pollen in them? I've just found a box in the loft with LOADS. PLus all my stuff that my OH hid when I moved in  |

Re: NO-NO's for the container
Hi I have contacted several removal companies about the stuff I want to ship out. Can't remember any names of firms just rang around a few. I want to take lots of very old untreated furniture, hand made wicker baskets, lots of wooden toys and ornaments. I have been told that I can pay several hundred pounds to have my whole container fumigated, then all will be ok. for me these old/hand made things are ireplacable, I do hope the removal companies are right in what they say anyone go any useful info about fumigation at customs.
