Where we live, people are very into historical houses with character so if you walk to someone's house and it is covered in pictures of family generations, with a farmhouse kitchen it is in keeping with rural/country culture not IKEA. Doesn't mean it is out of date.

I can't understand this 'behind' business. For every Uk house that has trendy wooden floors there is a house with walled to walled carpets in every room (as Vash says - even the bathroom) a ubiqoutus TV stand, trophy cabinet, DVD cabinet and 3 piece suite. Very sad.

My point exactly... its all about personal style. Okay personal style is influence by the cultural style of the country, but that does not mean if Aussies like brown furniture and flaired trousers they are stuck in the 1970's.

We are quite lucky in that we don't 'go' for the latest open plan housing (mainly because Mrs JTL cooks food that would stink the entire house out if it was open plan). We like rooms. We like departmentalised areas. We like doors between rooms.

So we are in hog heaven when we look at old houses here. No trendy young or wanna be trendie middle age couple will touch the houses we are interested in.

We do the in-between thing. Lots of seperate rooms, but all of one decor, and it can be made into one open area if we really wanted. But we have lots of family visiting, so NO, we will have seperate areas thanks

Oh and no brown furniture

Open plan - God how I love open plan! The main advantage is air flow. For the same reason we live in boxed houses i.e. lots of rooms with nothing connected here in the UK is to to keep warm. In Oz the houses are open plan to encourage air flow and its conducive to the lifestyle i.e. big living / kitchen areas which open onto a patio / verandah etc.

Most houses are set out like this unless you buy something inner city which is older i.e. before folk realised that terraces are good in the UK where space is at a premium but hey, look at all this space - why don't we add a few feet between houses!

I have lived here for years now and never understood the British penchant for painting every room a different colour. Well, that's an overstatement for I do actually understand - it gives each room a character and a purpose. I think.

. I keep saying 'we' but I'm an Aussie. And its true about not living to work - you will spend far more time out doors than ever before.

Friends of ours who moved over to Melbourne in November last year tell me they are never home these days. They just moved into a house they had built and its a: huge b: cheaper that the house they had here but twice as big and c: completely open plan. They love it. They also say they have never had so much spare spending money. But that's for another thread!

I'm not sure I've answered any of your questions. What I can say is that things are very different in Australia, many things are done differently and with a different focus. If you are looking for a version of Britain stay here. If you want a house like the one you have here you won't find it. You need to be open minded and open to change.

Dinnie

Thanks for your input on this........

I think at the end of the day this was probably a more personal matter than a general for all to make their comments on.

I know that things are very different in Australia in many ways, this is part of the the reason i hope to move there permanently,

I have to say that first and foremost is the quality of life that my kids will have as they grow up will be much better that here in the UK with many more opportunities and outdoor activities

Your absolutely right about the house thing when you say ( The Brits are more into their houses because we spend more time in them)

At the end of the day, what i really hope for is to find a nice area, family orientated for the kids, outdoor activities and a (hopefully) nice house at a reasonable price so we dont have to stress over a mortgage payment and( the missus doesnt have me working my B*****s of f to bring it up to here standard when i could be off down the local having a cold VB)

HHHHmmmmmmm! I just want an easy life! dont we all?

I am still curious as to where in Australia you have been looking to move to? Which areas were you looking at the housing in?

If you are serious and want to find a property at this price all you need do is the research and put a few miles in driving around on a a weekend. This weekends real estate pullout is full of $250k properties, one in particular we will be looking at is 6 minutes from the city on almost 2 acres!

Maybe you can even go that bit further and throw me a link to a few houses around the $250K along with some pics that you would happily buy!
If your talking about buying a house for $250k then to be brutally honest, in Brisbane for example, you wont be able to buy much at all and certainly nothing which I suspect fits your standard of housing. That money is first time buyer territory. But then again would you be able to buy anything for £100k in the UK and get that standard?

I think you are going to have to be somewhat realistic as to what you can buy and where for the money you want to spend. If you want a nicer house then spend more cash I'm afraid!

2 acres, even out where I am, would cost at least $500k. Or $600k if you want a house on the land

Hmmmm....Well I guess we might NEVER find out where these old fashioned, not up to standard houses were that he looked at.....

I was mainly curious because I got a house in August this year that was bang on $250k and it was stunning...totally renovated and fitted out with contemporary fittings....actually havent had to do a thing to it....

I know....most of you are saying "But you live in Bendigo a million miles from anywhere".....Actually soon it will take no more time to commute to Melbourne CBD than it does to drive from the SE Suburbs...

Just thought I would blow another of the "myths" out the way for those interested....

They are out there, You can take a look on the online gigs for houses at this price and probably not turn too much up but believe me they are out there, I looked at a couple of good houses today, both asking less than $300k for 4 beds with built in's, air con, DLUG, and one on 2 acres!
Didn't make an offer as I think they are still overpriced.
