Well I made it to work (about an hour earlier than normal!) and hope those that normally take ferries manage to get here one way or another.
koalakim - thanks, he was just very quiet when we left but his pal had joined him on the bed for a snuggle so they should be ok.

Our three year old woke us up at about 630 am shouting "Mummy, it's all orange outside"! It was completely surreal! Took a couple of pictures from the windows. Everything smells dusty and the walls around the garden which are painted white are covered in a fine orange dust.

The other thing is the wind, of course - not unusual here for August and September but pretty wild today for all that.
Wild enough for me to cancel my golf - yes! that strong! I don't fancy walking around beneath all those WidowMakers today.....

Last night we had the mother of all storms. Sheet and fork lightning which lit up the entire sky like it was day time. Torrential rain... then the dust moved in.
We're still blowing a gale and all the views have disappeared... and rain.
At least it's not as bad as the big one a few years ago which blew in a load of topsoil from the west. The farmers were not happy!

I thought I woke up on a different planet this morning. Then I thought, 'oh they have a royal north shore hospital on Mars too!'

Just come back from Shellharbour North beach and it's a strange two-tone colour. It's usual white where the sea has cleared last nights sand and the other half that looks like it's had tons of what looks like builders sand dumped on it...... and that wind is getting up... a lot.

...and according to this article just posted yesterday, we are thousands of years overdue for a 'big one' !
http://volcanism.wordpress.com/2009/...anic-eruption/
Associate Professor Bernie Joyce yesterday said there were about 400 volcanoes across Victoria, including some in the state's western uplands that could erupt at any time, potentially devastating the land around them and claiming lives.
''The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years - and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue,'' he said.

Here in SE QLD, the sky has taken a slight orange tint to it.
My daughter just saw the sky and asked if that's the stuff coming up from Sydney...

hmm.. alarms going crazy and the city just dissapeared. Can taste the dust. I tell you, these old queenslanders, it's like living in a big old pine tent full of rips.
... may have to get a beer in and watch ABC Kids.

Yep very orange in Thornlands right now - so strange - had one at night a couple of years ago and woke up to a dust covered car so I know there is going to be quite a mess once its gone!
