Re: Australian Arrogance
We're not arrogant; that's a fault you tend to find in other, inferior people.

An important point I like to remember in this regard is that I'm Welsh and therefore am better than everyone else.
I'm also not in Australia, but I thought it was a point worth making nontheless. :)

A Northern England famliy checked in yesterday and nearly had a heart attack to find a Welsh person out in the country, took the piss out of my accent and then expected me to have a nice little chat with them. We can all be arrogant. (p.s. I let their tyres down)

I have an aunt (non-Welsh variety) who lived in Kent. She was horriefied that we were moving to Aus....why would anyone want to go so far? Don't think she ever left Kent. Therefore I have to conclude that all English people never leave Kent. |

So, on the basis of returning this thread to a 'sensible debate'.
Does that mean if you call me "an ignorant tw@t" you are telling it like it is, but if I was to do the same, being English, I would be being arrogant and rude?. How does that work then? Keep in mind that I have yet to meet any Australian I have considered rude or arrogant. I also don't mean you personally, just all Colonials !! |

I wouldn't call you an "ignorant tw@t", if I thought you were completely misinformed about something I would tell you and tell you why I thought so. Whether you choose to be rude and arrogant is a personal choice, but probably nothing to do with your race.

It's no wonder that I don't find Australians rude/arrogant if all it amounts to is telling people you think they are wrong.
Australians for the most are proud of their country and we don't mind saying what a great place it is. For example, I live in the Middle East, the suns shines all year round, but you can't see the blue sky through the dust haze for nine months of the year. The English love it, think it's the best place on earth because they can lay out in the sun burning themselves to a crisp all year round - the permanent tan, an English persons dream. And I'm sure that's not all English people are like this, but certainly most of the one's that live in the Middle East. Yet we tell them the weather here isn't as good as Australia and to get a rashy and some boardies on their kids or risk them dying of skin cancer and we're being arrogant aussies. My kids go to a British school where Brits outnumber Australians, but I'm always hearing about how many Australians are at the school and how we must outnumber any other country. Not true, it only seems that way because we're hands on and like to get stuck in and participate in everything. At National Day recently, it was the Australian kids that got up and sung a number of Australian songs and sang the National Anthem (both verses because they all agreed that Beneath Our Radiant Southern Cross is the line that makes them feel most homesick). And before you ask, my kids also know the UAE National Anthem and can sing all of that in Arabic too. |

I'm sure that this might be excused as high spirits but the local Muslim population found it (along with most Brits it seemed) extremely offensive. My experience living with Australians was so negative that it coloured my judgement prior to moving here. As I said in an earlier post, my experience with Australians here has been very positive - most surprising given what happened in SE Asia. |
