Oh FFS.... you know what, you're right. I'm a ****ing idiot for even suggesting the very idea that not all Australians are globe trotters. I take back everything I said....
It goes without saying that every single one of them is either planning their next expedition up the Nile, is actually on said expedition or has just got back and is telling everybody where their next jaunt will be. Happy now? What's your beef? That some of us have met quite a lot of Aussies that have travelled abroad. Why does that itch your arse? Why do you have to interpret that as "All Aussies go travelling all the time"? Why is your alternative that no Aussies travel any of the time. The reality is in between. What's so wrong with accepting that? Yes. I'm happy but it's nothing to do with this discussion. :) |

The main issue I had with Australia is how most Aussies actually believe they are better than the rest of the human race (god knows why) Many Aussies haven't travelled or been outside their own back yard and just listen to the Aussie media telling them how wonderful they are and their country. I'm much more content now back here in Derbyshire , England isn't perfect but one thing I can say for sure, neither is Australia. Difference is the British are not so arrogant and one -eyed. I would warn anyone thinking of moving to Oz to think and think again , if you move to Australia you will bacome a second class pom instead of being a proud Englishman . For the first 5 years that I was here, I remember just about every celebrity that arrived in the country was asked What they thought of Australia as their first question - e-v-e-r-y t-i-m-e - used to drive me mad! It's better..now they say, do you prefer Melbourne or Sydney :D |

Oh no, not this arrogant aussie thing AGAIN. We were having a BBQ with some South African friends in our compound a couple of nights ago and this subject came up. It seems that Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans are very similar and are quite often categorised as arrogant by Brits. We think it's just because we like to tell it like it is. And as for national pride, my brit born (but aussie raised) husband finds it really sad that his english relatives have such a low opinion of their own country and people. They're always so miserable and negative about everything. But again I think it's where you live and the people you mix with in either UK or Aus. As someone has pointed out, the OP probably lived in some bogan hole with people that, as an Australian, I would probably not like living near either.
I had a weak few days tempted by London House prices, asked her opinion of the current state of the UK and whether she thought I would like it, she stated very firmly what you said., adding any first reaction from most, will likely be negative. In fact she is viewed with suspicion by locals as she is always so positive and happy..... They've even written that on her work review... They say it looks false, she calls it natural. Lets put it this way, it wouldnt be a problem in Aus. BTW she is working in Marketing/Advertising now, with the Company that put the Rugby World Cup in 3d in the Pubs. So Arrogance in my mind is being confused with being Positive. Little wonder that people get these traits confused, when people wont listen to how the UK is perceived by Oseas English speaking people. . |

Re: Australian Arrogance
I have to agree with the OP regarding the Aussie media telling them how great and wonderful everything is. Bad stuff seems to be swept under the carpet while anything positve is banged on about to the point of overkill and you start to question 'why do they do this - opium for the masses?' You hardly get any real global news items or stories shown on TV compred to UK, it's as if the outside world is irrelevent.
I quite like the national pride in Australians, it's something that the UK should take on board but the PC brigade will call you a racist if you hung a Union Jack outside your home. Australia Day here is a fantastic concept and I like the fact that school kids sing the national anthem at every school assembly. It gives everyone a sense of belonging, pride and community spirit. I'd say Poms are more well travelled than Aussies but that's only because of the UK's proximity to Europe and the cheap flights that have been available over the last 25 years. It wasn't that long ago, that anyone from the UK who had been to Australia was considered an exotic, wealthy traveller. Kids are now doing gap years in Vietnam, Africa and all sorts of off the beaten track places, this is only a recent trend of the last 15 years and some people on here think that Poms have been doing this for centuries or something. It's like anywhere in the world, the poorer and lesser educated people can't or don't have any aspirations to travel and are quite happy in their own little world. On the other hand, Aussies tend to spend every last cent on property so probably can't afford to travel once they get on the housing treadmill and saving up for their next investment property. The cost of living here prevents them from affording to travel. I don't feel like a second class Pom at all. If any Aussies get narky with me I put on my poshest accent, as I find most the wannabee middle class Aussies tend to try and speak with a posh British accent and lose the Aussie 'twang'. Altogether now .... how now brown cow. |

They do sell cheap ones on ebay, or better still try the op shops, they might give u the wellies for free :fingerscrossed:  |

I must admit I thought you were joking with your subway post as you were doing exactly what you were criticising in others. That's why I made a jokey response. Little did I realise that by having a non-extremist view of Aussies (which presumably makes me a Godzoner) was going to give you arse ache. Sorry. |
