I think you may be right Kim.

It's in the British psyche to be polite and good mannered. This can mean telling white lies to smooth the way and also not being boastful about ones achievements or ones country!

Aussies and South Africans can be very blunt in comparison ( Kiwi's less so IMO). This doesn't mean they are more arrogant - they are just more likely to say as they find. I wouldn't go to Australia and tell an Aussie that the U.K is more vibrant etc because i would worry about offending them. Aussies have no problem talking up Australia's good points because they don't have the same worry about offending.

I think in the UK we expect others to conform to our standards of politeness but that's not realistic although it can be very frustrating :D

A week in Ibeefa :p or travelling around Europe to go football rioting not make a person well travelled imo.

I wonder though how much of the original statement is true for say the USA ? Perhaps merely it is indicative of being in a large continent which offers a scenery of all types and seasons and to go overseas requires 1 if not 2 long haul flights. Far removed from being able to drive through 4 countries in one day and live in a country the size of a postage stamp.

My point is merely that to judge Australians by British standards and geographical advantages, or even Americans which would fit the bill, might come across a little arrogant. :sneaky:

I hope for your company's sake that you don't have Data Analyst in your job title ;) :D

Sydney and Brisbane.

I had no real complaints about the weather , although it did get a bit too hot and sticky in the summer and the flies put a stop to any picnics and oh yes it lacked green hills and countryside to have a decent walk and picnic with the family.

The main issue I had with Australia is how most Aussies actually believe they are better than the rest of the human race (god knows why)

Many Aussies haven't travelled or been outside their own back yard and just listen to the Aussie media telling them how wonderful they are and their country.

I'm much more content now back here in Derbyshire , England isn't perfect but one thing I can say for sure, neither is Australia.

Difference is the British are not so arrogant and one -eyed.

I would warn anyone thinking of moving to Oz to think and think again , if you move to Australia you will bacome a second class pom instead of being a proud Englishman . ( A pom is an Englishman who has basically had his spine removed)

This is like watching someone go through a divorce. The bit where the parties recruit people to their side with stories of how awful their ex-partner is. You'll be much happier when you move onto the acceptance stage.

And as for national pride, my brit born (but aussie raised) husband finds it really sad that his english relatives have such a low opinion of their own country and people. They're always so miserable and negative about everything. But again I think it's where you live and the people you mix with in either UK or Aus. As someone has pointed out, the OP probably lived in some bogan hole with people that, as an Australian, I would probably not like living near either.

I think it's more of an English thing than a British thing.

I put it down to the media. Both the US and Aussie commercial media are so insular in their reporting. It is certainly very rare to see any real news on anything outside of those countries and this breeds insular knowledge of the world. I work for a massive US company (30,000 employees worldwide) and 75% of the company's income comes from outside of the US yet all the decisions made are based on America, it's as if we don't exist.

That's just your perception. Check out any driving thread for an alternative reality.

There is a significant group who think that when anyone posts anything bad about Aus nobody is allowed to disagree.

I reckon you'll find the majority of Expats are happy in Aus, warts and all. I reckon you'll also find the majority are happy to be identified by their own nationality too. Why would someone want to change their identity becuase they like their new adopted country? Doesn't make sense mate:confused:

However the majority are also sensible enough to realise Aus was never going to be perfect and they're happy to explain this to others with unrealistic expectations by debating the issues that come up:thumbup:

Indeed. My 7 year old daughter got one last week. Which is good as I might lose mine because of some stupid rule that says you're not allowed to drive on pavements here.

Aye ... nothing wrong with a good reasoned debate but when the OP is shot through with the kind of thing we see here then they deserve a serve.

But that is what trolls do innit? Divide and conquer. And the world spins on ...

Right, enough of this LCD-based bollards ... I'm off to another typical Australian hellish day ... a morning of cricket net practice with a bunch of arrogant Aussies ... how WILL I survive?

With some retaliatory Ashes humour I think ... :D

I don't, but my point still stands.

These threads get full of lines like "pretty much all the Australians I know travel extensively" and "every Australian I've ever met spends Summer in the Alps and Winter's in the Maldives" and its just as much a generalization as "Australians don't travel".

As Hebe said, "the people who haven't travelled are usually the young, the elderly or the poor"

That's a bloody big chunk of the populous.
