The British always did consider themselves superior to everyone else. Things like this make it embarrassing to be British at times. Most Australians treat most British pretty equally, although there are exeptions. |

Where are the other Welsh - numbers are needed
In respone to the actual discussion why does everyone have to assume that people want to move to Oz because the UK is so bad? I am a very proud Brit (although Welsh first) and love my country but it does not mean that I would not like to try living somewhere else and give my kids experience of something different even if that different doesn't necessarily end up as something better. From reading this and other forums the two extreme sets of views tend to dominate these discussions although it should be blaringly obvious that the fact that there are two extreme sets of means that those views are a direct result of your own experiences/perceptions and are not represenatative of the whole country. You also have a responsibility that while you are entitled to that view not to try and convince those who are in the decision/application process that your view is set in stone. If you can't do that then you aren't worth listening to in the first place as you cannot give a balanced view. Please see transalation into Welsh below. AchllFFtwy:rofl: |

At office events they seemed to have no limits - food fights and extreme drunkeness were common. Can't remember the popular song that was corrupted so that "F*&k Off" (or was it "Get F*&%ed"?) was part of one line but the Aussies blasted it out with abandon - it didn't matter who was present.
I'm sure that this might be excused as high spirits but the local Muslim population found it (along with most Brits it seemed) extremely offensive. My experience living with Australians was so negative that it coloured my judgement prior to moving here. As I said in an earlier post, my experience with Australians here has been very positive - most surprising given what happened in SE Asia. I've met some complete wanker Australian expats while in Hong Kong and some complete wanker English ones in Singapore. Seems that they feel they have free reign to behave in a repellent manner when they're on some temporary secondment to a merchant bank, insurance company or trading organisation of some description. Childhood mate of mine now heads up the asia-pacific arm of a big financial company and I asked him if he'd learnt Japanese while living in Tokyo - he looked at me like I'd asked him if he enjoyed eating dog shit and said, "Good god, no!" Summed it up really. |

That's not what it amounts too, but your question to me was about calling you an ignorant twat.
Australians for the most are proud of their country and we don't mind saying what a great place it is. For example, I live in the Middle East, the suns shines all year round, but you can't see the blue sky through the dust haze for nine months of the year. The English love it, think it's the best place on earth because they can lay out in the sun burning themselves to a crisp all year round - the permanent tan, an English persons dream. And I'm sure that's not all English people are like this, but certainly most of the one's that live in the Middle East. Yet we tell them the weather here isn't as good as Australia and to get a rashy and some boardies on their kids or risk them dying of skin cancer and we're being arrogant aussies. My kids go to a British school where Brits outnumber Australians, but I'm always hearing about how many Australians are at the school and how we must outnumber any other country. Not true, it only seems that way because we're hands on and like to get stuck in and participate in everything. At National Day recently, it was the Australian kids that got up and sung a number of Australian songs and sang the National Anthem (both verses because they all agreed that Beneath Our Radiant Southern Cross is the line that makes them feel most homesick). And before you ask, my kids also know the UAE National Anthem and can sing all of that in Arabic too |

As Hutch has pointed out, loud obnoxious behaviour does seem to be an expat trait, however, we're not your average expats. We live life not a lot differently than we do in Australia. Most of the people I socialise with don't have maids and flashy cars, we still work and take our kids to school and pack their lunchbox. The UAE is obviously a little different to SE Asia as you behave in an offensive manner, especially being blind drunk in public, you go to jail, no questions asked. You may have heard about the recent spate of Brits sitting in prison here for kissing in public, affairs, living together outside of wedlock, being drunk, having sex on the beach etc etc.
By the way, the second national anthem you're thinking of is: http://youtube.com/watch?v=b7kYVjL2lps Am I ever gonna see your face again - No way get *****ed, ***** off But I stick with the original assertion, that it was Australians who were the stand outs in my experience. |

That might be true of the Aussies in the UAE. I can't say I have seen any evidence of that here in Australia. Most Australian parents seem to be just as apathetic about school events as Brits. |

This thread is very interesting and just makes me even more look forward to moving from England to Australia within the next year. I want to live in a country that is proud itself. I am pretty sick of being in the UK and everything is so negative. Uk is a great place to live, but no one says it !!
I am a scot who has enjoyed living in England for 10 years, but looking to get out before it implodes. I'm certainly glad I am out of Scotland as it is such a negative parochial country. Although I have enjoyed England, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is a country that is going downhill in a big way. They are letting too many people in (and that includes scottish !!), and the economy has no foundations (what does england make now ?). England is a nation of homeowners, who spend money based on the equity of their houses. My kids are going to be better off growing up in a country that is POSITIVE and proud of itself, even if it borders on arrogance !! Hope you enjoy your wet walks in the minging Derbyshire peaks, where the sun pokes through the dreary clouds once a year. Say hello to all the hairy bikers enjoying their ice cream in Matlock !!:thumbsup::unsure::thumbup::lol: |
