Just like, you should give your house away, because a homeless man may have better intentions for it than you and needs it more than you.

Are you prepared to do that?

Except, it's not the same. Two asylum seekers, one spot available, someone should get it. Two citizens, one house, someone already has that house. You made the point on prioritising for Australia's benefit. If you are a crap at your job and an Asylum seeker is better at it, Australia would benefit by replacing you with them.

Maybe there could be an Asylum Seeker Idol talent show or Big Brother boat where Australians evict boat people by text message to Scott
Morrison.

It is the same. You already live in a country. You cannot be evicted by someone more worthy. Same with your house. You cannot be evicted by someone more worthy. You may have not physically handed over money for your citizenship, visa or residency, but you own it.

Yes, ands asylum seekers aren't currently being prioritised based on skills. I doubt the Coalition are too far away from that though.

So what are they prioritised on? Their needs of resettlement? That's fine but I'm sure the number requiring resettlement and the numbers able to be resettled are disproportionate.

You sound like you want to treat the asylum seeker policy as if it were a car boot sale. It's not about you or me. It's about them. Priority should be about the asylum seekers needs and safety. We will reach our quota, no doubt, but why should we be allowed to cherry pick from the pool?

That's what we do with the people who come in via the UNHCR

So how do you decide if Mohammad has more pressing needs than Dilshan? If this is clear cut during an interview, then great, but I bet its not.

First come first served. I never suggested we break our threshold. There might be a case to make an exception and accept both but I agree with setting a threshold. This should be increased when possible though. Means of travel should not be relevant to being eligible.

..... and stick with our politicians then. I thought we were nearly on to a win win situation.

If you had a 50% chance of being killed in your home country, would you think it acceptable that you seek asylum in another country and have a strong case to get it?

I don't think that would be too hard. There are some very high calibre folk amongst the asylum seekers who would add to the social capital of the nation.

Australia should at least lift the quota. 25,000 inclusive of family applicants is a reasonable look for such a huge per capita, immigrant receiving country.

Not forgetting that it was a so called socialist asshole that started the "camps". Not that it was the right of politics that opened the doors to boat people in the 70s. Naturally in part a ploy thinking anti Communist boat people from Indo China would vote a right wing party here.
