2 separate issues

We insist on skilled PRs and 457s

We should do the same for refugees

They also have to provide police checks, medical reports, references and probably sit an English test. Should those be required as well?

Lets structure it this way.

If the quota of refugees was never reached, then putting one in front of the other would not be an issue. But the supply well and truly outstrips the places. Of course they could increase the quota, and probably should, but the quota will never be high enough to meet demand.

So how do you decide who takes priority over the next.

In this case, it might be a good idea to base selection on those who are going to benefit your own home first.

I think you miss the point. If we prioritise on how privileged an asylum seeker is, ie education and skill level, we are not really doing much. This should be about being selfless for the sake of people in need.

I'm not missing the point. You can either go with a lucky dip or you can go with a system that benefits someone.

Processing asylum seekers doesn't benefit them? How exactly would you verify an asylum seekers skill level? Should they sit a bar exam on a leaky boat?

How would you decide if Mohammed from Afghanistan take preference over Dinesh from Sri Lanka?

Listening to their story would be where I'd start.

So if you'd declare Mohammad's escape from the Taliban more worthy of entry than Dinesh's escape from the Sri Lankan govt, but you only had room for Mahommad, what would you do with Dinesh?

On the other hand, Dinesh might be more valuable to Australia. So if its the choice of one coming and one staying, surely the logical point is what benefits someone because either way, one will miss out.

Both might have more use to Australia than you. Should you be put on a boat because an asylum seeker can do your job better than you?
