Biggest benefits - come and go as you please without any further interference, ever. Not being treated like a second class citizen like you are with a GC (maybe not openly....but you are a second class citizen as a GC holder).

Yes, definitely apply. America needs fair minded, tolerant people, you go for it!

One disadvantage is that you might have to figure out a way to get out of jury duty.

Yes, you can keep your British citizenship (what they don't know won't hurt them), just make sure that if you travel back, you only use one passport while travelling... If you leave the UK using your British passport (for simplicity sake), then try to get into the US using your US passport (for simplicity sake), you might find that you have problems.

Yes you should do it. There is little, if no, downside to it (fingers crossed that conscription into the military wont be an issue in the years ahead though). Both Countries recognise dual nationality, as is written on both countries passposrts, so it will never become a legal issue, although you may get the odd immigration officer ignorant to his own job.
I recently renewed my British passort from washington DC. Word of warning though...they sent it back. Apparently I was smiling too much on the photographs . Anyway, It was sorted out within a few days once I sent them more piccies, this time sporting a frown.

I believe that National Service (or whatever they call it over here), is only relevant until a person is 26 years old. Once past that point people are only going to get called upon if they have served previously.

Regarding filing forever its only an issue if you plan to leave. And even then I believe with a green card there is filing responsibility for a few years (again important if you wanted to return)
I wonder how difficult this is anyway. Surely its got to be quite simple once you have done it a few times.
