Re: Price of gas update...
But that's part of the problem, isn't it - the fact they last forever means they keep running even when all the tolerances are shot, and that leads to pollution. There is nothing worse than being stuck behind an old diesel Mercedes! In CA, given the weather, they don't even suffer bodywork issues, so last even longer.
I'm certainly prejudiced against diesel because of this; if the longer-term pollution issues have been addressed, I'll change my tune. Maybe a forced-retirement of cars, like they do in Japan, would be in order ...

Why punish people for keeping their cars running? Common rail and PD engines are very different from the old smokers. They don't put out nasty stuff.

Is diesel fundamentally cheaper? I thought a lot of the appeal of diesel in Europe was that it was taxed differently, due to it being a 'truck' (business) fuel? Diesels used to be noisier and more prone to vibration, and of course a much bigger source of pollution. I hear the pollution aspect has been controlled, but is it controlled long-term - when you have 100,000 miles on the engine? I think hybrid is still the way to go.
It's not popular in the US because it's more pricey, also doesn't work across the country, anywhere especially cold can cause it to "sludge" so you don't tend to see many places selling it in Maine, except along the motor way and perhaps in the summer in tourist spots...it's getting more popular mind, but not all that convenient. Even the log trucks use petrol and diesel is much better on heavy loads.

Anyway, petrol, down my way the cheapest place had gone up to $2.71 which was a bargain, the next cheapest was a Hess at $2.75 nearly everywhere else was $2.80- $2.85

In Japan, well Tokyo...you've got to get a tax disc that's proportionally rated to the age of the car, it's essentially nothing for 3 year old cars and gets expensive for anything over 6, 10 year old car would be more expensive to keep on the road than to get a new car, which is why there's a massive "grey" import market for mid aged Japanese cars in the UK and Australia.
To someone like me who is used to keeping something running for as long as possible and then a little longer, that just seems so wasteful. Not to mention, with a plan like that I probably couldn't afford to drive at all.

It's another one of those geography things. A much smaller place that doesn't require a car to get to the mailbox, KWIM.

ABY - check this out; car scrappage pictures from the UK. There's nice some looking motors there.

What a waste. First dibs on the silver Merc in the foreground. And the Snaab convertible top left.

Not so reliant on the car out there either and because of dense population in the larger cities, it's to keep pollution down, and things like a car, environmentally speaking, they should be scrapped every 8-10 years, cost of running a new car and pollution put out means it is cheaper to get a new car and run it for 4 years than to get an older car and run it for the same amount of time.
Doesn't help with the up front cost mind

Aye, easier to get a engine than a whole car here, but the down side to a grey import, unless you understand Japanese, those full service histories are worthless and you could be buying a mellon

The UK is now looking at almost £6.00 per Imperial Gallon (£1.31 per Litre) in some areas of the UK soon. Most will pay an average of £1.20 per Litre according to the latest RAC report

Value of the pound has gone down
Price of a barrel of oil has gone up
Fuel duty has gone up
....and no sign of an end in sight

The thing I looked at was the mileage, which does accompany the motor. And, we got a guarantee from the business that put serviced the car (they use these engines on a regular basis). It ran well at least another 2 years until son traded it in for a nicer Honda which was then totaled while it was parked outside his house. A 3:00pm drunk hit it and was trying to leave the seen but son heard crash and found him staggering down the street. Luckily, the guy was fully insured and he bought a nice Hyundai.
