I started driving in mid 1960’s and gas was around 34 cents a gallon. Bought some during a so called gas war for 25 cents. It stayed about the same maybe 35-39 cents a gallon until the embargo of 1973 it jumped to 58 cents and up from there.

Very interesting chart. When you factor in much improved gas mileage of current vehicles gas is a great bargain even at today’s prices.

Given the fall on prices over the past couple of years, down to below $3 in many states, it would be interesting to see that chart reworked for 2024 prices and dollars, as I suspect that would show that the real terms price of gas is about as low as it's ever been.

Also US oil production with fracking and oil shale is the highest it’s ever been.
