Price of gas (local to Pulaski manor, NC piedmont) was down this morning, (yes, you read that right ) compared to last week, down to $4.639, from $4.699 last week.

Today I filled up at $4.42, cost about $92 and actually filled.. Most places the last 2 weeks were @$4.86 so maybe there is a down turn. 4th July notwithstanding!

I put gas in my BMW, so the high ocatane stuff, yesterday for the first time in a month and paid $4.949. I am not going anywhere in the next couple of weeks, but may be passing BJ's which has much cheaper gas, so I only bought six gallons, enough to get home and potentially as far as BJ's if I am passing that way. Otherwise I'll need a tank full when we go to fetch little Miss P from summer camp in July.

That's very cheap. Our local BJ's only does Premium, at $5.95 they don't offer Super.

The cheapo regular stuff is $4.65 with the credit card, and that's the cheapest around here by a fair bit too.

Round here gas stations sell Regular, Midgrade, and Premium. BJ's sells Regular and Premium (no Midgrade). Are you saying that there's something higher than "Premium"?

FWIW there are a few stations in my bailiwick that sell ethanol-free gas, but I don't know the price they're asking - my FIL prefers it for his boat. Also there used to be a gas station near the speedway that sold 100octane, but I don't know if it still does.

The difference between regular and Premium is $1.30? WTF?!?!?

Wawa offers 4 grades, they call 91 Premium and 93 Super but they are an outlier, most places are just 87/89/93.

AV gas is 100 octane ethanol free gasoline. I tend to use it for my garden tools and generator as the ethanol seems to cause more water retention than ethanol free gas , especially over winter. Plus you can't use it with a catalytic converter

Ok, but it's more complex than that because the octane ratings aren't fixed at 87/89/93 - they vary from state to state they are in fact 85-87 / 87-89 / 90-93, with the premium being by far the most mixed. So depending on where you live (what gas you usually buy), if you go on a road trip you might need to go up a grade if you buy gas in some of the states you visit, or fill up before leaving a "high octane state" if you're heading into a "low ocatane state".

There is a Wikipedia page on it if you're interested.

That's because avgas has lead it it!

Are you sure you're buying 100 octane avgas which is not AFAIK street legal. and not 100 octane unleaded race fuel, which is street legal?

Pretty much ever where over here offer regular, premium, and super premium. BJ's, is the only one that doesn't often carry the super.

A few years ago aviation gas came in 80 octane and what’s called 100 low lead. Older small planes used 80 octane. The 100LL has five times the lead that was in the 80 which has been phased out. Aviation gas is very different from car gas. How exactly I don’t know. It even smells much different and has a much longer shelf life. It fouls my airplane plugs to the point every year I have to dig out lead with a pick. My engine was made for the 80 octane. It is from late 1940’s.

If you look at the octane rating on the pumps - I just Googled a picture of BJ's at Northborough, MA the pump shows that they're selling 87 octane (basic unleaded) and 93 octane, which is the highest octane rating gas that is commonly available in the US, and which is sometimes called "super premium", presumably to distinguish it from 91 octane premium gas which is the highest octane gas sold in many states, especially in the mid-west and west.

A quick review of the Wikipeda page I linked previouisly, shows that I think all states west of the Mississppi seem to have 91 octance as their highest, except for Texas (93), Oregon (92) and Washington (92), and all states east of the Mississippi seem to sell 93 octane instead of 91, except for Illinois (91) and Wisconsin (91). At the junction apparently Arkansas and Missouri both sell some 91 and some 93 octane gas.

I will take a note when I drive by it tonight on the way home!
