"Perhaps if you remembered what it was you did back then you might be able to finish some more wars"

Edit - maybe add on the end "or did you just get lucky".

Tell them that a gay mathematician and the son of a bricklayer did more to end the war than most of the Americans. I think that factually holds up based on what I've researched.

On a side note about the battle of Britain, there were a number of US pilots flying for the RAF and I don't think it would have been won by us without them. In that way Americans could argue a reasonable case, however they were doing it without the authority of the US government and were told they would loose their citizenship by fighting with the British and I don't think many Americans know any of that story.

Those SEVEN American pilots who took part in the battle of Britain must have been pretty special.

I was just out for a walk and thought of an alternative for the ending of this one: "or perhaps you can only do it when other countries are helping you out"

I guess propergander is alive and well!
The people that do most of the talking about this have absolutly no clue that England was in the war from 1939, to them everything started in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I have been listening to this for over 40 years and it really gets my goat.
When I tell them that I played in bombed out houses in London as a child they are surprised and say something stupid like ":Oh, England was Bombed???" This is a soft spot with me, and I have been in many heated discussions with ignorant know it alls.
OK. I had my say.

you're welcome - years of practice....

"... yeah perhaps you're right that we would be speaking german; but it doesn't change the fact that you're still a moron..."

"... come back and talk to me when you have something intelligent to say..."

"... when your I.Q. reaches room temperature - Sell. ..."

Any of those 3 may not improve your situation so use your discretion!

Its Beer30!!

I have to say you Brits meet up with the strangest people in the States. I'm 59 years old and no one I know of has talked about WW2 other than my husband and my father and then only because of a movie they were watching.

Wonder if it isn't something that you Brits are saying or projecting about yourselves that make these Americans want to on your nerves like you apparently have gotten on theirs ;-)
