Hey Guys
I am getting so fed up with the "If it wasnt for the US you would all be speaking German" brigade at work. I need some comebacks that will make them look like the propergander believing twats they are!

BTW, Yanks saying that makes me wince. It's such a childish, playground type thing to say.

You might inform them that Germany declared war on the U. S., and not the other way around, which is something most Americans probably don't know. On the other hand you might tell British participants in these infantile pissing matches to quit repeating the lie that the U. S. profited from Lend Lease, or even that much of it was repaid, or that Marshall Plan aid was a loan rather than an outright grant.

You might want to remind them nevermind WW2; if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have the disaster in Iraq right now. Or in Vietnam in the 60's/70's.....

My OH always says "yea, forgot Yanks could re-write history",
and "hmmm, what happened at Pearl Harbour then...?"
My grandad never liked the yanks during WW2 and whenever he talked about the war all he ever said about the yanks was:
Over sexed
Overpaid
and over here
Oh and he called them bullet sponges (coz their idea of fighting in the war was to throw as many people at the front line as possible and use no strategy whatsoever)

How 'bout:
"Says who, fatso? Germany went off and got in real deep do-do with the soviets way before the Japanese caught you with your pants down. The US didn't do much at the siege of Stalingrad did they, Hmm?. You're just a bunch of Johnny-come-lately glory seekers really."

I realize that this is a bit of a sore point with you, but based upon the historical facts of the war, do you honestly believe that the Commonwealth would have been able to defeat the Germans without outside help? The numbers make it pretty obvious that this wasn't the case.
WWI makes a good case study. There, the whole thing was a big awful stalemate until the US turned the tide. In the case of WWII, I would imagine that Britain would have been isolated (I doubt that the Germans could have mounted a successful invasion, thanks to the sleeve standing between them and the coast of France), while the Germans would have been eventually defeated by the Soviets, thereafter paving the way for the whole of the continent being absorbed into a mega-Warsaw Pact.
In other words, the Brits would have been speaking English. But the French and the rest of their neighbors would have been able to look down their noses at you while insulting you in Russian. Vive la resistance.
