If you didn't "care for my comment", maybe you can enlighten me - Are you aware of any jokes emanating from Brits about 9/11? Iraq? I'm not. But I am painfully aware of the crap that gets doled out masquerading as jokes by "the good ole boys" over here about WWII. As it would appear, are a lot of other people ...
I wasn't saying that you were trying to be humorous and I know what you were trying to point out. You brought up 9/11 and Iraq, I didn't. I simply repeat that I don't agree that Brits would be more sensitive about bringing something like that up. I said ANYONE with any sense or intelligence would not make a joke about something like that, and they wouldn't.

I don't think you got my point, or other points I tried to make previously on this thread. I consistently did not take a stand on the US vs the UK or any of the rest of the foolishness of trying to be funny about something that is not funny. You can not "win" when battling an idiot.

Never mind, stick a fork in me, turn me over, 'cuz I'm done.

"The Republicans threatened FDR with impeachment if he brought the US into 'Europe's War' and they only went in by one vote in Congress."

Where are you getting your facts from? The only member of Congress to vote against the U. S.' entry into WWII against Japan (after Pearl Harbor, of course) was Sen. Jeanette Rankin of Montana, and after Germany declared war on the U. S. she merely abstained from voting on the declaration against them.

In that spirit ... while I could jump back into this thread - perhaps it's time to lighten the mood instead. Afterall, Brits, Americans, Germans, French, Africans, Australians - you name it ... I hope we can all be friends right?

I'm inspired by a song - one that could well have been used as the tribute to Hawaii in the 50 songs for 50 states quoted in a previous thread.

"Just hang loose
And just have fun
Sitting on the beach lying in the sun
Don't try to fight it
There ain't no use
'Cause when you're in Hawaii
You should just hang loose"

There's enough ugliness in the world without us adding to it, no? Chill everyone - save some anger for tomorrow.

Now excuse me while I ...

Yorkieabroad - I'm surprised that you no longer think Brits would be more sensitive about bringing something up?

Just teasing because of the way your reply showed up - relax!

Cindyabs is probably taking offense to the generalization that's being made about all Americans. Just like there are insensitive Americans, there are insensitive (and the opposite) from all countries. That sort of generalization just isn't very nice, or ironically, very sensitive. Cindy's a sweetie - no glaring please!

(I did point out that aspects of this have worked to your benefit.)

I've traveled on four continents, and I've yet to see a culture that didn't have some sort of blinders to the outside world. Britain and America are not exceptions to this rule.

I believe that any culture that has some sort of imperial present (in this case, the US) or past (ditto for the UK) is going to have some ego and rose-colored-glasses issues to sort out for itself. The truth lies somewhere in between the Amerocentric and Anglophile perspectives, and my hope is that giving you some (of what I perceive to be) insights on the former will help to temper the latter. And so it goes.

WHOA THERE!!! What a crock of shite!! You're making it sound like you were all there ready willing and able from the get go and entered the war "on time" to do us a favour. May I remind you that WW1 started in 1914 for some of us and not 1917 when Germany adopted a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare including sinking passenger liners they thought were carrying US munitions to Britain . The US didnt have any thoughts towards "coming over and helping to sort things out" at all...utter cobblers. The US entered the war because German U-boats were openly targeting your merchant shipping and British shipping that were ...<<Ahem>> flying old Glory on the jack mast.

As already pointed out they participate for their own economic reasons ie. merchant shipping, if it were to save or fight for democracy they would've been there when the Third reich invaded Poland.

Was it Hitler that bombed Pearl Harbour then Mr. History Scholar?

You did that for 2 years FFS.

Rushman, either your literacy skills aren't quite up to snuff, or else you didn't have that wank I suggest.

Well, come to think of it, it's safe to assume that the wank didn't require any encouragement from me, so I'll go with the former.

By the way, after you've wiped down the drool, feel free to type "phony war" and "sitzkrieg" into a search engine, and see what you come up with.
