Help wanted WW2!

Think it used to be (or maybe even still is) contrary to state law, but the Supreme court overruled saying it was a freedom of speech thing...could only be reinstated by a change in the constitution and I dont think thats been done (has it?). Can't imagine it'd be very popular round our way though...

The Flag Protection Act of 1989 made a criminal of any citizen who "knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon" a United States flag, except in relation to the disposal of a "worn or soiled" flag. In a number of cases that came to the Federal district court, the courts dismissed the charges under the belief that the Act violated the free speech clause of the First Amendment. The government appealed the United States v. Eichman case to the Supreme Court in 1990.

Just before anyone does anything silly
Quote
(a)(1) Whoever knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon any flag of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both.

The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
You can find a good copy of the entire US Flag Code at the Legal Information Institute, Cornell Law School

To the coworkers who claim Brits would be speaking German, consider a reply of "Maybe, but so might be you!"
After all, we in the US have to right to be proud of the fighting done in the war by our parents and grandparents. It was no easy victory: we lost over 400,000.
The British, with good reason, have every right to be just as proud.
It was our partnership with England gave the struggle a chance for victory. We all owe a debt of gratitude to those throughout the world who maintained resistance and stood their ground when and where they could.
Ask your friends if they would prefer to live in a world dominated by totalitarian German and the Japanese Empires?
They should remember with whom US troops were fighting. They need to ponder how many more US soldiers would have been lost without Ultra. What if the Germans developed the Bomb and deployed it on an isolationist US mainland?
