Besides which, it seems to me like shoehorning the facts to fit (i.e. circumcision has been around for ages, they are only now doing studies which show medical benefits and are trying to use that as a justification for the act) - it certainly didn't start off for medical reasons. I remember reading somewhere that the origins of male circumcision may be in child sacrifice... did anyone else read the same thing?
We stopped routinely docking puppy dog tails because it was seen as inhumane and cruel, despite the fact that pro- tail dockers were touting medical reasons (docked tails don't get caught, broken or gnawed on by rats blah blah). Do you think we'll ever manage to get around to making the same decision for human babies?

Oh no..... not the circ wars.....
This is one of the most controversial subjects on the Internet. Because it involves the parents' religious and "medical" beliefs, and that decision is more or less permanently visited upon their infant son, it brings everyone out of the woodwork. Toss in the fact that it also affects the boy's future sex life and locker room talk, and ..... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
I am so glad to not have had to make this decision.

I personally would not circ and leave it up to my son. Circing at an older age is not nearly as painful as some would have you believe. From the guys I know who have had it done, it sucks, but.... so does childbirth. If the boy wants to look like everyone else, he'll do it, or if more medical research turns up links to support it, etc.

There are extremely, extremely slight medical benefits to being circ'd but not overwhelmingly so. I say leave it up to the boy when he's older. Other than that, it is a religious issue. Just as female genital mutilation is outlawed in some countries, some people wish to outlaw non-medically-necessary male circumcision. I would not go that far, but I would not circ a son.

It is an atrocity which should be outlawed -- and which is carried out when a girl nears puberty, meaning she has every memory of being painfully violated.
