People saying "Let me get x, y,. z. " at service counters. As if someone is preventing them from getting it. I believe they think it's more polite form than saying "Give me x yz"
I dunno, the wording just annoys me, I feel like saying "sir, are you not ABLE to get it?" or "do you need permission?"but I keep my mouth shut.

Give me would be considered rude, and main reason why most don't say it. It was taught in schools (when I was young anyhow) to say give me when asking for something, always may I have, or let me have and such.

I may have misunderstood the above - as I cropped the sentence - but really, the above was taught to you?

I do hear some Americans say "give me x y z"
I always use "can I please have". And it's on auto-pilot.
It seems obvious to me though, regardless of whether in US or UK, as the meaning of the words are the same in either place.
