Thanks for the info. Cars are getting far too complex. No wonder no one can fix their own cars anymore.

Why would you want to park at an intersection? Isn't "Park" only used when parking? I am sure the "N" means "Not to be used".
Plus that means I have to take my eyes off my phone. My car has a handbrake but I never use it because I'll forget to disengage it since it's been 10 years since I've driven a manual. Usually I just keep my foot on the brake but if I'm stuck waiting for a mile long freight train to go by I will put it in park. |

Yep, as much as I like the automatic brake feature, it does mean you can't do handbrake turns. Started in my Capri, then perfected them in a Nissan something in the desert (on sandstone, not sand) in Saudi. Still hanker after a TVR and some smooth asphalt...

I turned that off on mine because I was getting through rear disk pads too quickly
Note - the new car - a Lexus RX350 - doesn't automatically apply this brake; I have to 'press and hold' on the brake for about 3 seconds before the hill-start brake kicks in (with a corresponding light on the dash). At first I thought the new car didn't have the feature and was miffed! The old car (CRV) just 'did it' as soon as the brake was applied. |

Wow - I had the first car from new up to 75,000 miles and never once changed the brakes. I live on a VERY steep hill (like, stupid steep) and used the feature every day when picking up mail from the mailbox. Also drove quite a bit in SF.

ETA: Which in fact is pretty much what you said in post #2732. |

They're driving automatics and aren't taught to use the handbrake while waiting at a light. An auto automatically creeps if you take your foot off the brake.

Doesn't explain why they can't just keep the foot on the brake...
A similar situation happens with drivers here in the US with manual transmissions; instead of using the handbrake on a hill, they use the gas/clutch and brake, constantly rolling back a bit, then edging forward a bit, as they try to balance the engine against gravity. Quite nerve-racking on those San Francisco hills! |
