Meh. So on the vaccination front Obama was seen to encourage it so of course Rand Paul opened his mouth about the dangers of vaccinations. Purely to rabble rouse the Gubermint-ain't-tellin-ME-what-to-do crowd.

Why must everything become political? That's a peeve.

Agreed. It is not a political matter, it's a matter of common sense, but I suppose there's not much of that going around these days anyway.

Designed that way. Apparently...

One wonders why we have had this sudden outbreak of measles, when it was declared extinct in this country back in 2000.

Assuming the vaccination rate has remained above 90% in the areas of the outbreak, does anyone have any theories as to how it got reintroduced? (Rand Paul most likely didn't, whatever he might have said before walking it all back.)

PC or non-PC theories OK, this is, after all, a wide-open forum, nicht wahr?

Domestically or externally...I have no idea about the vectors...

Re: Pet Peeves?

My theory is that it is a combination of people coming in from other countries (those may include visitors, intending immigrants and US tourists, where they contracted measles and infecting those who failed to vaccinate their children.)

Interestingly, the vaccination rate of kindergartners is higher in Mississippi (95.2%) than in Colorado (86%) [National Immunization Survey 2013]

Actually, the vaccination rate of children in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras has been higher than the overall rate in the US; but lower in India and the Phillipines, where there have been some serious outbreaks. Failure to properly screen the incoming is a major problem.

But damn it, why are parents putting their own children at risk by stupidly refusing to get their kids vaccinated...I suppose I just answered that question.

Bobette, having to write a valentines card to everyone in class, because it's a writing exercise.

Buying a box of 20 of those naff little cards.

Then being given a updated class list, saying kid has to write 21 cards as there are now 22 kids in the class.

In chunks of the crunchy west coast the vaxx rate is below 90%. In some schoool districts WELL below. 48 States provide for religious exemption and 20 states allow the nebulous "personal belief" exemptions

While watching The Walking Dead last night, it occurred to me that it could be a rather prophetic warning of the world in the hands of the anti-vax movement

People who can't understand it's not necessary to bring their kid to every single social event

Low vaccination rates seem to be an issue that can't be pigeonholed, as states affected include those on the West Coast, the South, the Rockies, and the North East.

High vaccination rates are similarly scattered around the country.

Seems to be a liberty issue related to children and their 'owners'.

Agreed, but one that seems to affect laissez-faire liberals and Christian-conservatives to similar degrees, and I read that Mississippi, in the heart of the Deep South, has the highest vaccination rates.
