Well I interpreted Sally's 1 word reply to your previous post as a joke - regarding the ubiquitousness of parking lot horror - because what you'd described takes place everywhere (unfortunately) - Calabasas, near her, Beverly Hills, near me...... etc.
But you then answered her very literally....

So I made that cheeky comment...and then I regretted it...but I also like to be mischievous...blah blah blah...so didn't delete despite having 2nd thoughts

The only thing worse than telling a joke that falls on deaf ears....is someone else lamely attempting to explain it....

And the only thing worse than that is for the 'explainer" (me) to be completely WRONG......

In which case I'll have egg all over my face...and it will be a sure sign that I've hung around here entirely too long.....and now see everything thru a filter of non-existing satiric humour........

And aren't sorry you asked?

That's ok...I'm not annoyed.

I knew fine well what Sally was referring to...it didn't need an acknowledgement.

But since I do go down there I thought I'd mention it.

Well, 911 is not universal is it? I assume in some fire districts you need to call a different number. We have 911 now in the town I live in, but we didn't when I first moved here...

Yes, I hear that some rural districts still don't have 911 service. That a community puts it on the welcome signs tells me that it either got 911 service relatively recently, or that neighboring areas still don't have 911 service.

What's all this fancy talk about 'calling' the fire dept?
Where I'm going you have to build the fire up enough so it can be seen from the nearest city (2k people) 7 miles away. And hope it's the day that the fireman is on duty.

It'll all change when we get electricity and telegraph lines.

I assumed 911 was available throughout this town, now I'm not sure ... the town has a population of 10,000 spread over 100 square miles. We are served by (I think) four volunteer fire departments located in the various villages. Only one has a web page. The others have facebook groups, which seem to indicate that they are always looking for volunteers, and frequently hold pig roasts, chicken barbecues and the like. Not sure whether they are equipped to douse fires etc.

It sounds like they might be responsible for starting more fires than they put out!
