Lovely weather for a nice cup of tea.

More like lovely weather to stay in bed. You lot are barking, putting up with this cold stuff.

It stops all of the flora and fauna from evolving into stuff that tries to kill us. ;)

We have heat that does that. (doesn't do it very well though)

That is one of several reasons why we left New York. A few days of actual temperatures below 5°F the winter we were there, thankfully with no wind, was among the reasons to leave. I just recall that no matter that I was wrapped up in my heaviest coat, with hat, scarf, and gloves, that it was difficult to breath in such temperatures, it felt like I was suffocating.

That's a very good summary of my walk to and from the subway this morning. (Planning to leave the rotten apple this year :sneaky:)

Got to have something to balance on the saucer (and leave a chocolate smear on the outside of the cup).

You drink your tea from a cup with a saucer? ..... You're more sophisticated than I imagined.

Of course I do. I'm British.

Also, holding the saucer prevents me from nervously adjusting my monocle in socially awkward situations.

Layered, winter clothing has improved loads over the years....much better to not bundle up in the thick stuff these days...and there are plenty of nice, bank robber style face masks that work a treat.

Just a shame there aren't more kids options.

It was (is) a very good thermal parka made of synthetic fibres that I got from Lands' End. My point was that the parka did a great job, and my only discomfort was from the air as I breathed it in. Maybe a fleece face mask would have helped because despite wrapping a scarf around my neck and mouth to try to create a pocket of warmer air to breathe, it didn't work very well. :(

I remember winter camping when I was a kid, and it could be pretty brutal. In my backpacking days, the budget priority was always boots, waterproofs and pack in that order, cos if you got those wrong, you weren't going to be having fun!

We were camping with the Scouts between Christmas and New Year this year and the kids had it so easy! OK, it wasn't the temps that you guys get, but it still got down to/close to freezing a few nights, with huimidity that made it feel worse, and it was wet and miserable one night/day/night. But the kids all had REI tents that kept them dry, low-temp sleeping bags that kept them warm at night, and for during the day they were in thermal base layers, quickdrying fleeces, great breathable windproof top layers, thermal beanies and/or buffs, decent gloves, and to top it all off, they were all sporting those chemical handwarmer/toewarmer/bodywarmer packs. Admittedly, the cost adds up, but if you've got to deal with bad weather, spending a bit on the gear to handle it can make life a whole lot more pleasant.

I did see a pair of gloves that was $300 but rated to keep your hands warm down to -30 F for the day....seemed a bit excessive, but if you worked on the slopes, that could be a good investment. Most things down to that temp seem to be mitt type things.

Think it was on Arc'teryx or one of those brands....all very swanky.
