Meanwhile, at least six people with full carts have all been checked out in the next aisle. All the while, you're stuck because you know if you change lines now you'll likely suffer the same fate in the next aisle.

Its not often I go to the grocery store (wife doesnt let me i spend too much) but the checkouts can be a pain. The pay by check slow coaches, the can you check these fifty million coupons types and those checkout workers at the express 10 items or less lane who ask a customer with a trolley load to come on over, just before you get there with your basket with less than 10 items.

Also whats a little unsettling these days is the addition of the adult sex toys isle in mainstream stores

Self checkout, where available, is the preferred option for me. All those time wastey things require the assistance of a checkout person, so the self-serve lanes are usually quick and easy

Whenever I'm in BJ's with my daughter, I lift her into the trolley and she does the whole self scan for me. She scans the membership card, lifts and scans all the purchases, presses the on-screen buttons to go to the pay procedure, scans any coupons, swipes my credit card,..... and signs her name! :D .... This also helps with bring "cool" (see thread over in The Lounge), ...... and if all else fails it is training her for a career!

BTW I am leaning against the trolley the whole time to trap it against the counter and stop it moving, as well as to pass to her and receive membership and credit cards and coupons.

OK, yeah, that does raise the coolness points quite a bit!

Oh yeah! .... It's usually fairly quiet when we go in there, and several of the staff recognise her and are amused by her ability to do the checkout with little assistance.

but they never bloody work...

Either something doesn't scan properly, or the coupon jams, or the stuff on the conveyor belt jams with stuff and sets off alarm bells, or the bag gets ripped off the thing and gets into a tizzy when you try to double bag, or worse, use your own.

I bloody hate those things.

WTF do I need to stick a chocolate bar in a bag for, or whatever other one or two small items.

You don't need to, just place them on the metal plate in front of the bag. I always do for small numbers of items at local groceries, Lowes, and Home Depot.

They work for me 99.9% of the time. Occasionally the system packs in but such is the way with computers. I don't bother faffing with coupons, my wife can all she likes but I hate those things.

As Pulaski said, you don't need bags - either the conveyor (if there is one) or the metal plate where the bags are kept just sense the weight of an object after a scan. You can just make a pile.

Glad it's not JUST me. Something goes wrong every sodding time. :frown:

Well I certainly sympathize because I have an uncanny ability to select products in BJ's that are not recognized by the scanner. I regularly have to call an assistant for something like tomatoes, cheese, or breakfast cereal. It's not like I'm buying exotic stuff, or for that matter that BJ's stocks a large number of product lines - it's a friggin' warehouse club! :frown:
