You set it up so well. It would have been remiss of me not to take the bait.

Plus, I consider 'bastard' to be a compliment, so thanks.

Actually I use that as an advantage. When I do say or do something fairly clever then it makes me look really good in a dumb blonde bimbo kinda Essexgirl way. Know what I mean;)

I was in a store today and noticed that the Halloween tat is starting to come in already. I hate it when all the stuff for "Holidays" come in the stores months in advance. Can't the stores just put it out for about 4 weeks ahead of time. Exception being Christmas as some people like to mail gifts overseas.

That just means limit.

And retzie is right, actually. The limit as x tends to 8 can't be infinity, as x will never reach 8. It should say that the limit tends to infinity (as you add more 9s onto 7.9999999..., you add more zeros on to the number that (1/x-8) becomes). This will also be a negative number as x is always less than 8.

Plus, if x ever equalled 8, you'd end up with 1/0, which can't be calculated.

Close, but not quite.

A limit can certainly equal infinity - it's just an alternative way of writing 1/(x-8) →∞. The problem here is that the limit differs depending on which side you approach x=8 (it's ∞ from the right, -∞ from the left). You need both to agree to say the overall limit exists and is equal to something.

The two ways to make the first statement correct are to replace "x→8" with "x→8^+", or to just say the limit does not exist. Since sideways 5 doesn't exist, that kinda makes the second statement more correct :D

*cough*

In other news...

Pet peeve: Having to teach limits to business majors in the Fall.

I came to realise the directionality of it after I posted that (it was the bit I decided not to tell the others about earlier). I guess technically one could give the answer as ±∞ without rewriting the equation.

Either way, both have the same answer in the end.

I think you should head into the three word story thread - it seems more your pace.
