You carn't sign on in the UK, unless you have worked and paid tax's etc....And to get social benefits you have to have a perminent address.....But i agree they always have a wod of money and spend alot of their waking hrs terrorising other people
Well they are used to people crossing their palms with silver. I hardly call reading peoples fortunes terrorising them, unless its bad news they are giving out, such as a future job loss or something

You wanna be careful about making negative statements on here about gypsies etc On another thread here, I was told off about making racist remarks towards Germans and Russians

Anyway haven't you heard England is flat , we have know hills only rain and moaners
And dont all Americans originate from somewhere else anyway Apart from the native indians of course..........
It really is a sight to see.All the Hillbillies in the American mountains talking toothlessly while skipping barefooted remembering family origins from the OLD COUNTRY.England and Germany

On a more serious note. ABC's show 20/20 presented a documentary last night called Appalachian mountains. It was very moving kinda like watching the Lorreta Lynn story.Very deep

Ours are known as new age travellers mostly now. We did have the original Romany gypsies. I spent my school holidays staying at my grandads house in Appleby, and the gypsies always brought their horses into town for the Appleby horse fair. I rode many a horse into the river along with gypsy children. Loved it!

Boy, there were some bust ups in pubs between the locals and the gypsies but the horses, the atmosphere and the spirit were sheer magic.

I think the new age travellers who are often mistaken for gypsies, are made up of a lot of society's spongers and outcasts. My memory of the real Romanies that they were often opportunists, not necessarily bad, and that they mostly worked hard for their income. My grandad, who also worked with horses, always liked them and he found them OK.
I enjoyed the colour they brought to summer.

Bought back memories of the annual Stow fair , you cant move in the village for the couple of days that they come in to trade their horses but it certianly livens up the place for a while .

I saw that show - damn those people are low. The 30 yr old mother looked not a day under 60, the loser culture seemed very pervasive, the lack of education quite amazing.

Shame the football kid didn't get himself out of the area as he seemed to have a bit more about him, classic to have a nice bit of incest happen just when the cameras were around.

Those miners were cacking themselves that they might say something wrong in front of the mine managers.

I never new the Mountain Dew had become a light narcotic for the masses, amazing to see the coke/pepsi being used in the sipi-cup for the very young kids. All those prescription meds forming a drug currency in the area.

In all, a very depressing place.

I read a book some time ago (can't remember the title at the mo) that indicated that the redneck/hillbilly culture came from Scotland.

When brother and sister mate and produce a child, I imagine the child is not going to have much flair for education.

It would be interesting to know if the narcotic consumption gives them that spaced out oblivious to life look or does it just come naturally?

Depressing!!! Well I posted some pics of where they live and those were some of the nicer abodes.

Scots/Irish of Presbyterianism beliefs that follow Calvinist theologists. For those that don`t know what this is and lets face it the hillbillys darn ain`t gonna know what it means for the next several eons!!! It means Protestantism. Its all amazing really, how many great historical thinkers were of the Protestant faith and that some of their number should degenerate down to the Hillbilly level.

4 normal guys leave the big city for a hunting weekend in the wilds. When they get there though, they find the place infested with hillbillys. The hillbillys seem pleasant enough at first dancing, laughing, drinking, playing the banjo and rocking in their chairs etc. Our 4 intrepid city guys then start their trip proper but for some unknown reason can`t remember the details, 2 get seperated and run into a couple of bad arse hillbillys who quickly subjugate them and then proceed to try and humiliate their captives by riding one and making him squeal like a pig, this is largely hillbilly foreplay before the buggering proper starts. Luckily though, one captive breaks free and shoots the hillbillys.........The film then largely concerns itself with our 4 intrepid adventurers running in the wilds for their lives being pursued by sickle/gun wielding hillbillys even the police are part hillbilly too. Won`t tell you the ending though, as don`t want to spoil it for you.

The film also deals with one or two other issues, such as what is morally correct and what is not in modern day society (early 1970`s America here)

I am actually getting very interested in this aspect of american culture and further reading is now a must.

Hmmm, that's about it in a nutshell. It raises some interesting issues on the controlling side of human nature.
