The obvious long term solution is an equality of incomes, give or take for similar jobs.

Obviously there will be some variations as there is between say California and Kentucky, but the wide disparities between nations will have to go.

There will be a slower move from areas in need of labour from those with a suplus but not the massive issues we have now.

Greater penalties for those who break the law hiring ( wondering what word to use now to describe people who crossed border illegally since illegal aliens seems to offend some people) the workers we are discussing certainly appears justified.

Though does bring up interesting question- an employer breaking the law is penalized but an individual who breaks the law for working for him isn't
penalized. Kind of a weird logic.

In any case many work for cash or have false documents, so wont solve whole problem.

But there is very issue of supply and demand. If already lower skilled workers suffering low real wages, unemployment, how will increasing the supply in a 21st century economy of lower skilled workers push up real wages ? Whether minimum wage raised just simple economics of supply and demand.

Years ago in California a lady cleaned our house for cash. She saved as much money as possible to send back to Mexico. Her children went to school, she received food stamps, Medicaid, and if I recall she qualified for some sort of subsidized housing. The amount she sent to Mexico far exceeded what she paid in sales tax and often her purchases were for cash from businesses also owned by people who weren't "legalized" or perhaps I should us
the the word " potential citizen). Just heard story of roofing contractor in North Carolina going out of business due to PC contractor. Those losing jobs may end up on welfare and Medicaid.

The article would need to consider the indirect costs of immigration of PC's for a more full effect.

I know there are a lot of wacky theories being bandied about on here, about how the election result could be overturned, etc, but this one has a ring of plausibility to it: ‘Prediction professor’ who called Trump’s big win also made another forecast: Trump will be impeached .
With a Republican House and Senate, an impeachment vote is possible. And with a Republican favorite Pence as VP, impeaching Trump simply opens the door to Pence. This could be a brilliant strategy; Trump got them the White House, and now they set him aside in favor of a favorite son Pence, and let all the 'establishment' back into the game.

ETA - and let's face it ... who would you rather have - Pence or Trump? At least Trump is willing to stir things up. Pence, with the full backing of the establishment, could possibly do more harm.

Wow. You turned her in to the authorities right? I mean, you wouldn't have allowed somebody like that to keep doing what she was doing just so that you could get somebody to clean your house for cash? Specially not if you yourself were an immigrant (legal of course!) because then you would be risking your own immigration status by breaking the law.

When we start referring to the people that employ undocumented workers as "illegals" then I might take some of the anti-PC outrage on this thread more seriously.

People have been crossing the border for jobs because there is a demand for cheap labor. Until we start cracking down on the people that employ undocumented workers then this whole conversation is just a joke.

I've tried to nicely point out that the term 'illegals' is a hurtful term. If those of you (who expended so much energy arguing and shouting me down in order to defend your right to call people racist names) feel that it is so very important --- then by all means keep using the term. Just know that people who hear you will make judgments about you.

And the Republicans have never been willing to do that. Maybe that will change under Trump, but I suspect he will have a hard time convincing Congress to approve meaningful penalties for employing undocumented workers.

This word started appearing around 1939. It is now commonly used by the media and others when describing a group/number of persons who have entered a country without lawful status. The US use the term illegal aliens others use illegal immigrants. Is it racist? Some will say Yes but if that group of persons are all white it doesn't to some have a racist meaning. A quick overview of any ICE detention centre in the USA you will find persons of all countries including the UK being detained.
Because its an adjective it is not proper English to describe these people as illegals however if it was a noun then I guess it might be OK.
We have no problem using the word criminals to describe a person in jail who might be inside having committed only one offence. Does that become hurtful to that person?
We should be more concerned on what to do with these persons as opposed to getting our knickers in a twist in choosing a word to describe them.

If US citizens are unwilling to do these low paying unskilled jobs then issue work permits to people willing to do them with the prospect of them gaining PR status in whatever country. But thats too radical of an idea to some countries.

Up until this thread started I had no idea people considered it a racist term. It is used quite often in media reports from various countries including Canada and TBH I have never seen comments in the media in Canada describing this term as racist. perhaps our media describe them as illegal immigrants as opposed to illegals therefore not as controversial as that single word used.

My self esteem is pretty good without having to use this word as I have rarely used it apart from on this thread.

Somebody would claim it would be against their Human Rights.
Some States still have the chain gang work assignments. Would the general public be happy with these persons working in hotels, restaurants or any businesses that employ persons without legal authority to work?

Prisoners already do work, both for the government and private sector while in prison, might not be enough of them to also cover all the jobs undocumented immigrants do.

You may have also talked to a prisoner at one point depending on what state your in, they do call center work and telemarketing.

Yes...and they work for much lower wages than the undocumented do.....and those are jobs that could and should be done by those on the unemployment rolls or social assistance. Prisoners doing work for the state is one thing. Doing it for private corporations so they can avoid paying fair wages is another.
