While I applaud the expansion of further education, unfortunately it does devalue the bachelors. Add on to that the disappearance of many corporate training schemes to be replaced by employers demanding entry level positions to be filled by experienced people.
Isn't this just a natural consequence, though, of there being a shortage of jobs? When there are more applicants than openings, employers get to be picky. I've had the luck to live through a few 'boom' times in Silicon Valley, when employers were fighting over candidates, and you could make outrageous demands as the candidate. But those opportunities are few and far between.

With so much 'manual' labor moving overseas - for obvious and difficult to change reasons - it's not clear to me what the 'solution' is, for that large portion of the population that does not have the aptitude for the fewer remaining 'less manual' jobs.

Then again, simply having a degree does not in itself necessarily guarantee mental competence.

Case in point - Ben Carson ...

I was talking to someone yesterday, getting some J1's in, and showed me the contact details, definitely want to meet Olga...

But a very different proposition to what they can get locally.

Because someone criticizes a candidate's policy it doesn't mean that they are automatically a "surrogate" of that candidate's opponent(s).
I don't understand why you're trying to argue semantics about what a surrogate is, especially as the article is accurate in this case.

It makes it seem like a distraction from the point that it was a statement from Clinton's campaign that originated the talking point.

What shortage? There are over 5 million job openings right now.

Do you have something to back up that assertion? Fox News has been going after Sanders tuition plan since at least last fall. And my impression was that it was the presidents of several "traditionally black" colleges that raised this.

So Megyn Kelly and Fox News are doing the next (and final I believe) Republican debate next week.

Rumours are circulating that Trump will just skip it... considering his performance at the last one and the intense controversy from the last week I wouldn't be surprised.

I am interested to see how he spins it if he does skip it, though.

Fox needs him more than he needs Fox.

Statement from Clinton Campaign on Feb 16. I don't see this HBCU angle being mentioned any where before that.

Issue of the candidates' higher education policies as regards HBCUs raised as long ago as last August:

"Everyone should want debt-free education, but no one - especially African-Americans and those living in HBCU communities - should want the plans forwarded by this slate of candidates to be the higher education solution.

Presidential Hopefuls' Higher Ed Plans May Close HBCUs

And one more specific comment from last December:

"But Lezli Baskerville, the president and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), a group that advocates for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominantly Black institutions (PBIs), expressed concerns that Sanders’ vision for tuition-free public colleges may have unintended adverse effects on enrollment at HBCUs."

Easy peasy. He can just lie and say the police told him to cancel like he did in Chicago.
