It's a Rome that Flavius Aetius (born 391 AD– assasinated by Valentinian III in 454 AD) would have recognized.

I think Marco Rubio actually has the inside track at the moment, Scott Walker comes across as being a bit too stupid, even by American standards. Not that Rubio is smart but he seems a bit more polished.

I seem to remember reading something about him sticking everything on the office credit card (and then quietly paying it back).
Is the US ready for an expenses expose in the Telegraph mould?

Isn't he going through his own expenses scandal (similar to Aaron Schock) at the moment?

Having a "debate" with such a crowd would more accurately resemble a beauty pageant featuring a bunch of homely-looking, humourless middle-aged men - and one less than lovely-looking, humourless middle-aged woman with a bad haircut.

Makes sense. You want something more than a 30-second recitation of some stale talking point in response to a question...which is all you would get if you don't limit it somewhat.

What does the electorate actually gain from them?

Well, last time around we found out that Mr 9-9-9 is an idiot and Rick Perry couldn't remember the name of one of the departments he wanted to scrap... ooops. The entertainment value was pretty high, at least early on.

The candidates really are on a hiding to nothing with the debates. How many voters are going to be persuaded by a good performance in a debate, very few. But balls it up and you can be screwed as you become the next day's viral video.

I can already imagine the whining when some of the contenders don't make the cut.
