The Giantaxe is exactly correct. Conservatives are the sea anchors of society, slowing things so that the pace of social change doesn't make society unrecognizable from generation to generation... and so they will never be in lock step with progressives. That may be actually be a good thing as there are nuts and crazy people on either side of the political spectrum.

Also we need people to point and laugh at.

Anyway I'll say it now as I say before every US presidential election - it matters not who the President is really, the power when it comes to domestic policy largely resides with Congress.

Whoever wins the presidency in 2016 it's hard to imagine the Republicans will lose control of the House given their large majority.

If Hillary wins, nothing will get done.

"Conservatives" in Alabama blocked removal from the state constitution of a ban on mixed-race marriages until just five ago. Although I agree that there are "nuts and crazy people on either side of the political spectrum" I think society can do without that kind of "sea anchor".

Rick Santorum, a devout Catholic and a long-shot contender for the Republican nomination, told a Philadelphia radio station: “The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science, and I think we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists and focusing on what we’re good at, which is theology and morality.”

But doesn't the far right not believe the scientists and instead believe that congressmen without a science background knows better?

Angry US republicans tell Pope Francis to ‘stick with his job and we’ll stick with ours’

Not to mention their morality seems to often align with the hypocrites.
