It was thirteen colonies.

And that's only the British colonies, so not counting the bits acquired from France, Spain, Russia, and Denmark.

What do you call it then? Variations in all spoken languages.

A foreign mockery of proper sophisticated English. They all wish they were English, you know. But there's only one true GMT and centre of the universe.

Especially since a plurality of Americans are actually of German descent!

If anything a mockery of real English, it is the snooty creation of the Victorian Era and early 20th century English, which was spread to the middle classes by the BBC in the middle part of the 20th Century. Much of what is ridiculed for being "Americanisms" in Britain are actually continuations of the English that settlers took with them during the colonial era, and but which later fell out of favour back the UK.

An exception would be most of the spellings that resulted from American attempts to standardize and simplify English spelling, but which in reality only created more irregularities. Such why "license" serves as both verb and noun in the US .... but there is still "advise" and "advice".

Take me to a region or county of England where there is no regional variation in spoken English ? Same in Spain or anywhere else. Point I was making wasn't about accents or variations of spoken English but that America and it's spread and development of the world has more to do with English being a language most commonly used rather than England itself.

Well, some relief here. No mention of cut-off dates:

And I am sure the American movie industry played a big part in this. Working overseas most of my life, I have met so many people over the years who have learnt English by watching TV, especially Hollywood movies.

Absolutely true. But as we all know, "Global Britain" will soon be back to teach the world "proper" English. And they'll learn too, because everybody aspires to be as sophisticated as the Brits English.

(Well, at least they did many years ago, and apparently, we're going to return to that time when everything was so much better).

Besides - my original point was that Free Movement doesn't benefit the vast majority of EU Citizens unless they have language skills to a near-native level. With the UK out of Free Movement, that issue becomes seriously, seriously accentuated.

Yes we all know without the UK everything will go to the dogs. Freedom of movement will be dead!!! Such a drama. As there isn't high EU immigration into Germany or Austria or the Netherlands

True and can't agree here either:

Funny enough I live in Ireland and many jobs in our company require a foreign language, so we have plenty of Germans and French who benefit from Free Movement.

Freedom of movement benefits the vast majority of EU citizens hugely. Language has little to do with it. Friction-free trade and labour within the world's largest market however, does have something to do with it.

You'll find any level from beginners to native level. Just wanted to point out to Assanah that you don't need the local language to a near native level, as long as you speak another language (French, German, Spanish).
