if it is Barcenas files then all that shows is they received officially donated monies as additional payments from the party.
their tax arrangements are another matter

So backhanders in brown envelopes are legal now?

Barcenas has personally 30 million euros in a Swiss bank account. How do you think they got there? He coudn't have saved that on a meagre politician's salary.

One person's donation is another person's bribe. You may find that they came from a lot of construction companies and cajas in exchange for a "loosening" of regulations or even the odd blind eye.

There is a reason why so many things in Spain are only semi-legal. The politicians can make themselves so much more money that way.

Absolutely farcical really, if it wasn't such a disaster of epic proportions.

It was wishful thinking, a sort of "build it and they will come", well they haven't come, certainly not in sufficient numbers to stop it losing megabucks. Interestingly, the only Spanish airport to have an AVE station is Ciudad Real, and yep, you're ahead of me, it's closed! Ryanair transports more passengers in Spain than the whole AVE system. And at a profit!
I'm not in favour of the high speed link in UK, but as you say, they won't be ferrying empty carriages around and stopping at little villages to let two people get on or off.

oh dear, you are skirting the issue with me as you do with everyone else
Barcenas received money from donors to the party, he paid that money out to members of the party. Where is there "theft" ?
If he kept some, or all of it then that would be theft from the PP but most definitely NOT THEFT by the PP.

perhaps you should take an AVE to see what the Princess Royal is doing with all the money she and her husband stole from charities ??

So no hint of curruption there? Politicians should be free to put millions into their bank accounts "donated" by 3rd party organisations - and if they dont even declare this to the authorities or pay tax, then that should be overlooked too?

You are more rotten than they are!

thank you
but I did mention tax - although you have conveniently forgotten that as usual
and of course its ok to get the taxpayer to cough for a duckhouse that gets more use than the office, and lets not forget all the visits that 2 Jags made to the Seychelles, inspecting their reefs and having a great time in the water.

You have reminded me that many years ago my father, a buyer for Hawker Siddeley, managed to get 2 tickets to Farnborough from a paint manufacturer who had a stand there. The sticky buns were really nice so i suppose I should put that down in my declaration of interests.

I do not understand why you keep trying to turn this into a Spanish v Uk thread.
Just because I and some others dare criticise a Spanish venture, it does not make us anti Spanish.
I just do not get the relevance of your continual reverting to the UK.

So what Spain does is wrong and what the UK does is right, we all understand that.

As an immigrant, with no (or very little) rights in Spain except to live, what right do you have to criticise what Spain does or does not do. And do you think that in your tiny little world they will actually listen to you. ??

Spain has been on the AVE venture since before the first line was opened in 1992, connecting Madrid, Cordoba and Seville.
The UK, who you wish to deny exists in this context, still hasn't made a public statement that work has started, although it has been agreed in Cabinet. You stand more chance of stopping that than you do of Spain finishing what is the longest HSR network in Europe with 2,441 km (1,517 mi) and the third in the world, after China and Japan.

So why don't you go back to the UK and pull the covers over your heads, or stay here and feel just a little bit of pride that Spain is still providing employment to the construction and development staff despite a recession that could easily have killed the country, letalone the project.

Dom, why not rid yourself of all this pent up frustration and go to the appropriate section where you can voice your disapproval of all that is wrong in the UK, just as I've suggested to others, rather than once again turn a thread into the proverbial pissing contest ?

Contrary to what you claim, I've done it numerous times myself and will continue to do so as I think appropriate.

Another AVE project, turned into an expensive and disastrous Fiasco, mainly by the typical build first think later mentality.

http://elpais.com/elpais/2013/06/19/...66_857457.html

Villages and Farmers cut off from their water supplies without any warning and water "illegally" re-routed to other areas.

Only then long after work had started was a hydrogeological study began to try and figure it all out.

Meanwhile the project is running more than three times over budget with little prospect of completion anywhere close to the scheduled date.

"in February 2004, Cascos and Economy Minister Rodrigo Rato laid down a symbolic first stone. There was a month to go before elections. Cascos boasted about the project. With every new speech, investment grew. By 2010, Cascos predicted, the Oviedo-Madrid trip would take just two hours and 12 minutes."

Dick, it has nothing to do with what is right/wrong with UK/Spain, it is expats who think they can use a forum such as this to vent their spleen about things that have nothing to do with them

And from your tone above I would suggest you are the one who is looking for a pissing contest or driving out those who don't agree with you

very sad really
:(

Surely anything that can directly or indirectly have an affect on the economy, infrastructure and numerous other aspects, can have an affect on expats in Spain.

In any event as I understand it the forum is there for anyone to express their views about ANY SUBJECT they wish, within the bounds of reasonable behaviour, regardless of wether it affects them or not.

I hope the Mods will correct me if I'm wrong ?

I have no wish to drive anyone out and I'm always keen to read a broad consensus of views, regardless if I agree with them or not.

I'm merely pointing out that if you wish to constantly continue to air your views on the UK, it is more appropriate to do it in the correct place, by starting another thread if needs be.

I'll be very happy to join in and as you can see from previous threads along those lines, I have probably expressed as many negative views on UK topics as just about anyone else.
