http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23158002 I once saw this impressive magnificent beast when it was still in service in my very early days and it wasn't till later that I learned about it's achievements. Don't think I was wearing an anorak at the time, more likely a home knitted woolie Balaclava. Wonder if that makes me a Closet Trainspotter ? |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23158002 the state the US and Canadian A4's came in they really need to have them taken away from them. The work carried out at York to bring them up to what they should be has been maginificent.. but seem to remember DD making a very pointed comment that this thread is for Spain and not for UK sad really ` |

I did collect train numbers (Ian Allan?). Used to jot them down then underline in the book.

I still have my Ian Allen's, having been initiated by a whole day at the Radyr sheds just outside Cardiff and lived an easy cycle ride to go to the 20th mile bridge north of KX (there was a metal stencil sign nearby saying "London 20 miles".) Saw the initial trials of the Deltic Diesel on the East Coast Main Line and also a most ignominious failure a mile north of our spotting point where the beasty had to be towed by a stinky old steam train back to KX . but I never ever got an anorak  |

Re: Train development news
well considering all that the UK did for the progress of the railways
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...gles-cope.html as trains are restricted to 20mph as its too hot for them meanwhile in Spain the AVE keeps on running  |

Problems like expanding rails, leaves on the line and the wrong kind snow are far from unique to the UK, plus many other weird explanations, if you followed the media through quite a few other EU countries where we all wrongly assume that everything is always ticketyboo. I've often come across the silliest of problems in countries where I'd least previously expected them. Anyway as I said before why not start a thread specifically dealing with all your many worries about the UK, rather than starting another pissing contest which was my objection before, rather than the lighthearted harmless banter which followed ? |

That's the ones that haven't already been taken out of service and the lines abandoned.

Ah well, just to lift the depressing mood surrounding the Great Spanish train catastrophe, try this.

especially your own comments regarding the UK or many other countries that are patently not Spain Just as I have today and in many other instances. " rather than starting another pissing contest which was my objection before," or " rather than the lighthearted harmless banter which followed ?" I'm truly amazed if you can't see the difference. No I'm not having a go at you in particular because in fairness it's only recently I've noticed you do it. Maybe you've been following our resident train spotter too much and got into his invariably bad habit when nailed down of making detrimental remarks about the UK, obviously as a desperate last ditch attempt to avoid or sidestep the issue being discussed, there again he's not the only one. I find it somewhat childish and if I've occasionally been dragged into it myself, then I unreservedly apologize. It's almost like kids in the playground, "my dads bigger than your dad" "no he isn't my dads bigger than your dad". Surely far better to discuss each more interesting or complex case, wether in the UK, Spain or elsewhere on it's own individual merits rather than the proverbial peeing comp, though as I said a little light hearted banter here and there should never offend anyone. Hope that helps clear the air a little,... there again maybe not. :) |

After all we are British Expats (Spain) and know everything about anything. |

I would be happy to have a discussion about the HS2 which I also have doubts about, but probably best put it where it belongs in Siesta time or P de T if you think the sparks are going to fly, as with any other UK related topic. I've started plenty there myself, many much less than complimentary, and I would expect most expats to take some sort of interest even if they have no intention of ever moving back to the UK. |
