Heroically? Straitjacket? You are sounding like Spain is the victim of some Europe wide conspiracy mate. It is a corrupt, screwed up mess that led itself towards financial ruin by over spending and blind faith in fraud and criminality. I mean don't get me wrong, I love the country and its passion, love the culture and history and given the weather we have endured in the UK over the last 18 months I absolutely love the weather but lets not forget why Spain is in this mess. No one forced the town halls to build over priced white elephants, no one forced landowners to sell land that shouldn't be built on, homes that couldn't be lived in, airports that would never see a plane... The Euro is a completely moot point, its here to stay, its death would signal the death of the EU and it just wont happen, countries may well pull out, who knows but the Euro is here to stay. The real issue is has Spain learnt its lesson and judging by its denial and playing the victim I'd say not.

Heroically? Straitjacket? Yes, all a bit melodramatic! Spain needs give itself a foot up the arse, stop blaming the world for all it's problems, they are all of it's own making, a corrupt country, corrupt from bottom to top. Despite receiving billions over the years, they still manage to waste it and a lot more.

Someone requote this, so even Aggy understands it was the Telegraph (still run in the UK although owned by foreign owners) who used the "heroic" word. Specifically the article by the journalist, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Economy minister calls for deposits of over 100,000 euros to be given protection
De Guindos says Spain had trade surplus for the first time on record in March
EL PAÃS / AGENCIES Madrid / Brussels 14 MAY 2013 - 19:45 CET
Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos on Tuesday proposed that Europe should provide protection for deposits of more than 100,000 euros in the event of bank failures, arguing that the current guarantee limit of 100,000 euros is “artificial.â€
Speaking to reporters in Brussels after a meeting of European finance and economy ministers, De Guindos said that guaranteeing bank deposits of 100,000 euros or less is not in doubt, but that there are moves to reach agreement providing protection for amounts of over 100,000 euros as well, in the case of exceptional circumstances and based on very strict rules.

As I said, you don't seem to be a great one for heroics yourself at the moment, Stevie.

Please don't reply with more personal attacks - I shall report any further you make today. It must be ruining the board for everyone else.

I've said this before, but IMO the biggest worry is further taxes on house-owners and property purchases. People can move money from an account if they're over a certain limit, but very hard to hide a house.

What are you on about? Are you half-cut already? Apart from your constant personal stalking, who on earth engages in "heroics" on a talkboard

I've never heard that argument either in the press or by Spaniards themselves
The people blame the politicians, the PP blame PSOE, PSOE blame PP. But everyone blames each other
Spaniards are excellent at putting their own country down

Incidentally a Spanish person I know indirectly has put together these signs that the economy has now turned the corner.
It's obviously from a PP point of view, but shows perhaps their faith that things are now getting better.

1. Unemployment is now falling - The fall of 46,050 in the April figures was 7 times that of April the previous year
2. The number of new joiners to the autonomo scheme is rising. 51,000 new subscribers is three times that of the previous year.
3. Youth unemployment has actually fallen slightly over the previous year, by 26,000. Once the EU "new deal" is implemented, this fall is expected to increase a lot.
4. Price rises are being contained - Inflation has fallen to 1.4%, which helps the Spanish economy to be competitive.
5. Pensioners have recovered their spending power that they lost under the previous PSOE government.
6. Fewer cuts now needed. The economic credibility of the government now means 20 billion of cuts, previously demanded by the EU, are no longer required.
7. Payments to suppliers by local authorities have been resumed thanks to the Plan de Pago a Proveedores.
8. Greater external confidence has resulted in lower bond interest - saving 1 billion euros a year in interest.
9. The sale of motor vehicles has risen 11% in comparison to last year, thanks to plan PIVE.
10. Consumer confidence is now rising - the Ãndice de Confianza del Consumidor reported the biggest rise in its history for April.
11. Export growth. Exports have grown at 5% over the last year and in most sectors. The country is now running a trade surplus.
12. Tourism receipts continue to grow. Tourist revenue has increased by 14% over the last year.
