SPain as a country will survive this mess but its new form may not be to expat's liking.
Taxes have already been raised

Income tax, IBI and IVA have all gone up this year - and there will be another IVA increase in the next few months

Let's see, how do we encourage ecomonic growth in these tough times when people are struggling to make ends meet?

I know, let's raise taxes - a lot! That should make the cost of everything go down, encourage people spend more and businesses to become prosperous and hire lots of people... Brilliant!

And all those new tax revenues should start rolling in anytime now! We're gonna be rich!

Let the good times roll!

ironic that the US is going round shouting about everyone else but it was their very own Lehman's that caused it

and how many state banks in the US are in dire straits but they hide it from the rest of the world with smoke and mirrors about other countries ??

plain mathematics......

when the number of people paying tax falls to raise the same or more government pocket money you have to increase the taxes on those who are still earning otherwise you cannot pay the benefits to those not working.

an increase in IVA will cover some of that pocket money, as most sales are taxed, even those working on the black whilst not paying income tax will have to contribute via IVA.

many companies will reduce their margins by 1 or 2 % to cover an increase in the IVA, meaning the consumer will pay the same and the government will get their increase in pocket money.

Face-saviing aid for Spanish banks planned to go ahead soon.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8H656X20120606

While Berlin remains firm in its rejection of Spain's calls for Europe's rescue funds to lend directly to its banks, the officials said that if Madrid put in a formal aid request, funds could flow without it submitting to the kind of strict reform programme agreed for Greece, Portugal and Ireland.

Instead, Spain would only have to agree to new conditions tied to the reform of its banking sector. Berlin is also exploring the possibility of funneling aid to Spain's bank rescue fund FROB to reinforce the message that it is the country's banks and not its public finances which are at the root of its problems.

I listened to a clever economist the other day and he proposed a solution for the troubled Spanish banks and their property portfolios. 'Write them off,' is what he said.

From what little I know, Spanish people don't think that way, but they are terrified of the men in black coming to Spain. It goes back to the time when Spanish debt collectors purposely dressed in black to shame the debtors in front of their neighbours.

And if the men in black come from Brussels, they will still be debt collectors and will shame a whole nation.

(As an aside, people in the UK don't seem to care as much, and it wouldn't matter if they turned up in pink).
