His menu del dia is excellent for €7.50 but only rarely includes the black pork grill as a treat for regulars and not usually the coffee. It is however a very full meal.

This is a treat for Friday/Saturday a full "four courses" for €10 and excellent quality to boot. 5 of us going over tonight will report back but meanwhile eat your heart out JON and stick to the diet we will raise a glass to you

Thanks John

Lost about 10 pounds in the first 3-4 weeks - and have eaten well, never hungry and eaten at restos and friends homes without asking for a special meal.

Problem is I bought 4 pairs of trousers in December they are too big! It will all go back on the moment we arive in CE!! Better bring those pants!

But looking fwd to the report on the Friday 10 euro menu

Have fun
Jon

PS We are 'regular' - at least 2x a week (why cook for that price) but not as 'regular' as you, (you must eat lots of fibre :) ) but we always get the coffee in the 7.5 Euro price. Maybe because my wife hasnt got room for desert after the first 2 courses. In fact until now it never even occured to me that the coffee was not included.

PPS Thanks also for the lunch recommendation at the old Don Diego hotel. Very good and filling!

PPPS Do you have news about the shop change to a snack bar - has he started working on it? He planned a Feb changeover ... AND is the new resto (next door) run by Portugese people coming on nicely? Any idea of when it will open??

PPPPS - no more PS's :p

We were there yesterday at the same time as J&K and we had olives & bread, soup, main (which was a choice of either hake, beef stew or pork), dessert and coffee plus small carafe of wine for 7.50 each. Bryony

We had the beef stew and a beer and a water but could not do coffee! The chips were to die for but the rice was just too much.

Quote LUIS in Monte Fransisco is open and serving the best menu del dia around 4 courses for €7.50 but don't ignore the menu real Portuguese food for reasonable prices, the black pork ribs are as good as any.

Good recommendation

Just had lunch here cost 15e for the two of us. Excellant value and good food. Will definately go there again

Hi, for those of you (like us) who like local food at a bargain price how about giving the cafe/restaurant at Pingo Doce (VR) a try. They have a very good take away area that does ready cooked chickens and pizza's etc. Then they also have a grill where you have a choice of various fish or meat (cooked in front of you) + 2 veg for 3.99. Regards Bryony

We came across this in the Pingo in Faro when we arrived early to pick-up. We did a little shopping then had coffee and pastel de nata for about 90c so on a morning drop off we went down for lunch and sampled from the take away section since the queue for the meal was out the door (a sure sign the locals think it is good, saw customers from "Luis's" in the queue). When the shop at VRSto re-opened we decided we would work out how best to use it so we did a pricing recce last Saturday and worked out you could just about match Luis's crisis lunch. Soup and roll 90c main €3.99 sweet say €1.50 and a drink €1.50. The fresh grilled salmon looks very good and different to the normal restaraunt offering. Other good choices as well.

Well we had a super lunch that would have cost over £100 for 2 in a middling UK restaraunt including drinks. Needless to say it cost less than a quarter. and the quality was excellent easily up to the last time I had wild boar in Germany.

PS more Jamie Oliver than Heston Blumental if you know what I mean

La Cocina de Vicente is on the other side of the busstation, right after pizzeria Siena and MRW.

We have been to La Cocina de Vicente and had a delicious meal. we ordered a mixed salad to start expecting the usual lettuce / carrot / sweetcorn / tomato and tuna combo and were delighted with what we got which was lettuce with sliced tomatoes sprinkled with rock salt, marinaded red peppers, strawberries and melon. Delicious and refreshing. We each ordered a main course but these were delivered one after the other so we shared both and both were lovely. Slightly more expensive at €43 for 2 for 2 courses and coffee but included a bottle of local wine which was also very good. We shall return, but possibly only once each trip!
