We have been to La Cocina de Vicente and had a delicious meal. we ordered a mixed salad to start expecting the usual lettuce / carrot / sweetcorn / tomato and tuna combo and were delighted with what we got which was lettuce with sliced tomatoes sprinkled with rock salt, marinaded red peppers, strawberries and melon. Delicious and refreshing. We each ordered a main course but these were delivered one after the other so we shared both and both were lovely. Slightly more expensive at €43 for 2 for 2 courses and coffee but included a bottle of local wine which was also very good. We shall return, but possibly only once each trip!

I have to recommend a fantastic resto we found courtesy of a chat with John+Kath.

Its in a favourite place for us, Santa Luzia, the next town along the coast from Tavira (direction Faro). Its a lovely fishing village and the capital of 'Polvo' (squid) in Portugal. Weve seen boatloads of them coming in and once I asked for a photo, and they let me pick one up... bigger than me.

Its a great place to walk around + have a drink. And at one end see the fishermen mending their nets. Also at the west end of the town is a walk or a short slow touristy train ride to a beach with facilities. There is a short road from there to Tavira... so its a great day out visiting both towns and maybe even catching the boat to Tavira island.

The resto is called Casa da Pichana - a Brazilian resto - the like of which Ive been looking out for for a while now. For SEVEN euros you get a lunch of great salad bar, and unlimited skewers of all sorts of meats that endlessly come to the table. Then an assortment of deserts + coffee. You get a big bowl of rice, veg and black beans (a bit like the deep south!).

Weekdays except Monday. In the north part of the town away from the water.

Drinks are extra but not expensive... and they do a nice Caipirinha.

Take the Tavira exit from the mway. Go down a couple of roundabouts to the 125. Go right direction Olhao. Then shortly left at the Santa Luzia sign. You arrive at the west end of the town, with the train. Go through the town to the east end and then follow the road around to a T junction. Turn left and follow the signs. Delicious and amazing value for money!

Will be going there a lot, as we do enjoy the town and the day out.

Happy eating and recommend making a day out of S-Luzia and Tavira.

Jon,

Thanks for what sounds like a great tip. I found a further glowing report at

http://santaluzia-portugal.blogspot....-you-bust.html

I think I know where we'll be trying over the next couple of weeks.

And look forward to trying "El Ferry". We had expected it to be quite straightforward as its being opened by owner of El Corsario "La Casa de las Tapas", a favourite inexpensive meal of ours in Plaza Léon Ortega behind La Caixa on Avenida de la Playa. When we were out in Feruary they said they were getting it ready and recruiting staff.

We´ve just discovered Santa Luzia & Pedras d´el Rei a few weeks back and it´s a great day out! Lovely beach and not too crowded. Kids love the train Jon mentioned, it appears in this Kiko Veneno videoclip:

Just a quick adendum:

We ate there again.. amazing value. There is a quicker way to get to it. If you take the route Mway-125 I mention above and come into the west side, then just before you get to Sta Luzia there is a left turn, signposted. Follow the signs till you get to a T Junction and actually you go straight over to an ungravelled parking area for the resto.

Wow dolphins - I havent seen any here on our Atlantic coast - that would have been very special......

Happy eating

Oops second addendum.... keep forgetting - age is getting to me !! The 7 euro 'economico menu' is Tuesday to Saturday incl. Salad + meat skewers (or dishes of the day) desert choice + Coffee. FYI you get to eat 6 meats at lunch.....

The evening is a la carte - so more expensive, but if you order the meat skewers there the choice is TWELVE meats!

Groups of 10 or more its 15 Euros ALL-IN all food all drinks (including all softs) etc etc. Good for a party.

The numbers are 281 400 936 and tlm: 917 576 104

BTW I have no commercial connection... sorry for not putting all this in one post..

We went in twice, but it was empty, so moved on - until Palm Sunday when most places were packed out. But we moved on and had tapas in our favourite place Quitapenas.

We had a look at the menu. Its a bar/resto so you can have just a drink - very well renovated and chic.... but we think it lacks personality... a big modern room.

Its a marisqueria (sp) so shellfish etc are their speciality - though they do have eg solomillo for 12Euro and argentinian steak for around 18-20. The shellfish platter is 44Euros and must be a monster! We get the feeling that its clean and hygenic. We didnt see any sign of a menu dal dia

We may try it out this week.....

Cant miss it, imagine walking off the ferry towards laguna square and you cant miss it on the right corner, before you get to the square.

Re: Restaurants

Have been going to La Puerta Ancha, on Laguna square, next to Solbank, under many different managements over the last 6 years, with varying degrees of appreciation.

We've just been there twice over the last 2 weeks, and were delighted by the new team that have taken it on just 3 weeks ago, Fabio (Italian and speaking English) and Cliodhna (Irish so speaks English & Gaelic!). They have done a significant refurb and are starting out with a limited (their words) menu of freshly prepared tapas/media & raciones.

The food is excellent. Unusual combinations to us; prawns wrapped in salmon, mojama sprinkled with nuts, solomillo with a mushroom sauce. All freshly prepared and obviously done so in house (so the croquettes appear in different sizes), well presented etc. etc.. Wine list looked good though can only comment on this month's Rioja which went down well. Menu should be in English within the next few days but they're happy to explain.

We have no commercial link to it, just hoping that there are enough people around who value such enterprising alternatives to the standard fare.
