I would define it as food who's composition has been changed chemically and industrially to make it cheaper and quicker or more conveient to make to fit a modern lifestyle

Not a perfect definition, but a concept

Normally includes adding tons of salt, sugar, frustose syrup, palm oil, E numbers etc, not for taste reasons, but for convenience

Yes, in a way bread that has had loads of crap added so it will take 2 weeks to go off is highly processed.

Of course not all bread is like that, the same with hamburgers and many other things, there are versions that are better than others

Yep, its what makes them look golden. In fact, they used to use a meat product, but the veggies complained. The starch composite they use to make the fries would be white if they didnt coat them in a sugarly solution. Again, not exactly what you imagine when you fancy chips is it!?

By the way, many products you buy in the supermarket have sugars added. They are used as cheap fillers and preservatives. My wife is lactose intollerant, so we've had to cut out nearly all processed foods, including cheap chorizo. Can only buy the good stuff now. We eat much better for it

I just find that whole rigmarole of dissecting a dish into its individual ingredients and coming to the conculsion that it is "processed food" because it has flour in it, not only futile but also stupid.

Because almost everything we eat and drink is "processed" from coffee, tea, herbal teas, wines, vinegar, all have been throug a process to arrive in the state we buy them in the shops.
Yes - you are right - the term 'processed' is as vague as you say which is why I object to its use in the way it is often used. The point is some processes are good - in fact vital. Others are not.

And BTW you misread my original post. Bread is 'processed' not only because the flour and other ingredients which go into it are processed but the very act of making bread is in itself 'processing' it.

This is from the introduction of the wiki item Food Processing.

Food processing dates back to the prehistoric ages when crude processing incorporated slaughtering, fermenting, sun drying, preserving with salt, and various types of cooking (such as roasting, smoking, steaming, and oven baking)

Actually, she can eat cheese in small amounts, as long as they use the old fashioned techniques (i.e. the more expensive artisan stuff) and dont add lactose powder during processing

Because most of us (in Italy anyway) live 20 years longer. Just been scanning the local necrology notices; ages at death - 83, 87, 91, 94, 76, 86 - get the drift? My Donna C has just had her 81st. and is fitter and has more energy than most city women at 50!. Physically that is; unfortunately the big AZ is creeping in.

Isn't this all about eating a balanced diet, whatever country you live in.

There are plenty of exceptions, nobody below 83? Curious, I just looked up the average life expectancy figures, and surprise surprise, Italy and UK tie at position 13 with 80.5 years. But due to the healthy eating in Spain, to the much vaunted Mediterranean diet, you can live for a whole 4 months longer until 80.9.

Maybe it's not the diet but the more relaxed lifestyle

Yes, it might be a more relaxed lifestyle, but apart from a few months, they aren't living any longer. Spain for all it's heralded easy living, fantastic healthy diet, average life expectancy is 5 months longer than UK. Not long is it? I don't imagine the lifestyles of people in the cities and people in the countryside of Spain, Italy or UK are hugely different when it comes to stress.

True,

In fact I think the it would be more stressfull knowing that your dole is running out in Spain, and after that you will have to feed your kids somehow........all the sunshine in the world does not help in that situation.
