Poor and Stupid, No,

Rich and Stupid, Yes, if they are willing to pay such silly prices for Junk food, but there again many of them do look on it as a special treat.

Mcdonals claim to serve 225 million customers a year throughout their 400 restaurants in Spain. Are their really 400 touristy destinations for all those uncouth Brits or are those pesky Spaniards sneaking out without telling Cricketman

I don't think that's right. Have you considered that some of your posts are so over the top in support of all things Spanish that it may be these that result in the responses you get.

I repeat, Brits eat 5 times more fast food than Spanish. Americans eat 10 times more

I trust that survey, compiled by a respected business school, more than your anecdote that you "see lots of Spanish people in McDs"

btw. All things Spanish are not great. The country wouldnt be in the mess it is in if that were the case. But when people spout such rubbish that has no base in reality, rather stupidly I think I can inform people

But really I shouldnt bother, people trust their prejudices above all else

Stu, i did the math on excel those figures equate to (average) 1541 customers per day every day of the year at each outlet.
perhaps that is line items ordered??
considering my local doesnt open until 1200 they will have to be going some for the rest of the day.

It is an alternative, where the very young, the young and trendy go for a snack. It isnt a meal.

just imagine a future Spain, where like the UK the high streets are full of McD's, BK's, Pizza Hut, Patti's Kitchen, etc etc - all serving up identical meals no matter what city you wake up in. But then you will be able to buy throwaway clothes from the likes of Zara et al and not wash anything.

has the makings of a science fiction story.

Thats true. The OTT posts that everywhere is bad, Spain wonderful just encourages knock Spain posts. Not really knocking it just being realistic to these posts. It's an OK sort of place but as in food it doesn't rate as special, only to the Spanish

In the greater scheme of things I imagine most ppl would put Spain in a fairly lowly position in the world food stakes, or should that be steaks

It will be interesting to see the figures, ( another pun ,Im on form today),in a few years time when the junk food joints are firmly established throughout the land and this all in addition to their own version of junk food which they regularly give the kids.

Doncha just love Wikipedia - lethal in the wrong hands.

I suppose you will tell us next that tobacco wasnt known until the mid 1800's because that is the first time we had cigarettes - although tobacco is recorded as being indigenous to the America's with documentary evidence preceeding the 7th Century, so again possible for Drake to have brought it back from his holidays.

Apart from dealing with the armada I thought Drake was far too busy relieving the Spanish of their gold to bother with the humble spud.

You know, the same gold the Spanish robbed from the Americas.

Just waiting of C'man coming along to tell us we got it all wrong and the natives gave them it as a present to show their gratitude for all the kind favours of the conquistadors.

Actually you didn't.

If you can remember that far back when you started the thread it was about Spaniards moving to the UK.

It's gone so far off topic I'm moving it to Siesta Time.

It's a lot more interesting than the original topic - keep it up.

Actually Spanish tapas places are springing up all over the world - quite a few here in London, although I've only come across a couple that does their cuisine justice.
It's the Brit food tradition that needs better marketing - I've taught students in the UK from all over the world, and the one thing they tend to agree upon is they have a poor opinion of British food before arriving. The problem tends to stick if they're in cheap accommodation in a road full of chicken and kebab shops. We need to ship them out to good digs and decent home cooking out in the country

I'll help you out, the headline says "Spain, the country that spends the least of fast food in the world"

British people spend 5 times as much on fast food per person each year. But then, I did say that earlier

Well I would place the standard 8 Euro Menu del Dia firmly in the class of both "Junk" and "Fast" although you might not I suppose.

I wonder if the amount spent by millions of Spanish every day on Menu del Dia are included in those figures?

"Basing one's beliefs upon one's personal experiences is rarely a good idea" - now where did I read that?

They aren't meant to be haute cuisine but they are cheap and nourishing and the main meal of the day for millions of people.

That would likely put at least 90 percent of Spanish ppl.in the junk food addicts category, especially if you include the US style junk food joints and the junk they feed the kids as well.
To be fair, from what I've seen of M.d.Dia they are at least a shade better than the likes of Mac crap.
