A related experience today. I flew from Tenerife North to Nice via Madrid and didn’t pass through a single passport control (even on arrival in Nice). I’ve just discussed it with my daughter (who works for a large airline in the Middle East) she tells me that everything would have been checked / recorded through the flight system ahead of arrival and anyone of interest would have been plucked out in Nice, but the journey would be recorded against everyone.

Ive travelled a lot within Schengen and usually go through a passport control or check of some description…. if you land in Madrid from Nice you do. . API contains what you outline but your passport / ID is swiped or scanned at check-in to verify it, that goes ahead of you with the flight manifest and it’s that scan that makes a record of your movement or contributes towards it (hence what I’ve mentioned before about stamps being pointless )

You don't normally go through passport control or have your passport looked at at all on arrival with a Schengen internal flight.
Normally, the only check would be a visual id check at the boarding gate.

Everyone tends to picture the EU in the light of the contributing countries forgetting that there are only 7 ( or 8 depending how you interpret the figures) who contribute and about 20 to take. Those countries tend to be the poorest and trying to introduce a computer system which would be compatible with more advanced countries will be a nightmare. Remember how it was discovered that the traffic lights in Moscow were controlled by a computer running Windows XP? I suspect most of us will not see it in our lifetimes.

There may be a record of some kind when your passport/ID is scanned, but there are a lot of databases throughout Schengen and they often don't communicate to each other - hence the need for ETIAS and EES to standardise all entry and exit data for Schengen for immigration control, security, crime prevention and detection etc.

Portugal is a nett beneficiary of EU funding but still managed to be a pioneer for smart borders.
Schengen member states will be obliged to implement systems to the standards required and agreed.

Until ETIAS and EES come on stream, the only IT system requirement is SIS and SISII, which are a passive system used to screen passengers against alerts issued by member states for serious immigration offenders (including those banned from entry into Schengen), fugitives from justice, terrorist suspects, stolen/forged documents etc.

Not for long, though.
