Ive only heard about this recently... Note the financial requirements, return ticket, accommodation etc.

Note I believe printouts from online banking aren't accepted as proof of finances. Which is weird to me as many people have gone paperless. A credit card statement is also accepted.. but again many people just look at it online. Even Bank letters arent accepted!

Whilst some people may 'forge' an online document the vast majority wont and this could cause more frustration on entry. Its just impractical....

These are NOT new Schengen rules! Its all written down in Schengen rule book.
What is new is that some EU states are applying rules more strictly, as its their legal right.

Errrr... After all that, your only point is that it isn't new. !! 1 word!! And capitalised bold letters too.

I mentioned that this could apply in all Schengen countries.

In fact if Spain has decided now (or recently) to apply rules they didn't apply before.. AND .... have gone public, then ... these are actually "new"!! For all intents and purposes.

There are other far more important things to get concerned about !

It's not new. In fact every country in the world has rules like this including the uk.
I can remember being asked for proof of funds when we went to Australia in 2018.

All that is happening now is Spain may ask for this info.
I'm assuming a 20 something scruffy lad with just a backpack would be the type to be profiled, where as a granny with 2 suitcases wouldn't.

Its the same with customs, you can be stopped and searched but 99.9999% of the time ordinary travellers never are.

If anyone reads further into it, a valid credit or debit card is considered 'funds' and as has been mentioned above its nothing new for most countries in the world, its something the UK is particularly hot on for certain types of visa holders arriving in the UK.

I don't think even that's what's new - they must have been habitually demanding this of non EU nationals all along.

What's new is that UK nationals have now joined those ranks.

I went to the USA (from the UK) in 1980 and had to prove I had a return ticket, a job in the UK to return to, sufficient money and somewhere to stay in the states.

I think these rules have been around for ages but did not previously apply to Brits now we are a 'third' country they do.

My point was that in the past few days, the news channels have advised us all that the Spanish authorities have recently advised travellers that they have changed the previous policies and introduced/implemented new policies . After the UK left the EU we fell into a different category, and they've decided to go for a change (or new) rules different than we had before these announcements.

Many sites, like the one Missile added say essentially the same thing.

Credit cards, travellers cheques etc (all mentioned in my OP at the link at the end) are valid - but even bank letters arent accepted nor are print outs from internet banking. They don't want to see a credit card, but a statement... Im guessing showing you have available credit. As in the link also.

I don't think its scare mongering, the quote in the OP is the reaction from the authorities, who are annoyed by people complaining about it.......

I doubt that I would be stopped.... but I do think its important to know when things change.... Especially border entry requirements.

Then its up to each person to decide what level of risk to take .... Vs any penalties/ hassles 'forewarned is forearmed'

I'm just surprised that this is being pushed as a change of attitude on the part of the Spanish authorities.

Surely anyone can see that it is the UK that has chosen a change in the relationship, regardless of how that might be presented in (errr..) various sectors of the press.

The Spanish authorities are presumably underlining what it means to be a 3rd country for the benefit of those UK citizens who now find themselves in that position and not Covid-restricted.

IMHO this is certain elements of the UK press / Internet media outlets creating a headline to attract ‘clicks’. For the mainstream reliable press its been given limited or no coverage. Euronews, Nottingham Post and Daily Record are hardly what I would call mainstream news, click on any of them and your page fills with adverts and click bait. Im sure there have been some articles from the mainstream press with very limited traction.

It’s nothing new, Spain aren’t really pushing it or enforcing it …….. its a non story. Do you really think that the Spanish border staff will start checking everyone’s finances ? Of course they probably do for certain nationalities who are prone to disappearing into the ether once in Spain, in the same way that UK and other countries do. But the average traveller from the UK will not be troubled by this. Of course they will keep it up their sleeve for the odd idiot misbehaving on a flight or on arrival !
