my OH used to say that too - he was from Essex, but he blamed his mum who was from Cromer.............

No, Lincolnshire - but it's all Eastern England, I suppose!

Good point. I doubt rules will ever trump popular usage, especially in the modern age of TV, internet, mixed cultures etc...
