If this were the case I'd doubt that any search warrant the police may have originally been granted would include all other property throughout the street and its unlikely they would have sent the dogs up there at that time if there was open access right along the street.

It could also explain why the neighbour was taken in for questioning.

All just supposition of course at this stage, but no doubt all will be explained in the fullness of time.

In any event a very sad story all round with the child losing her life amongst those in whom she most likely had complete trust.

as we know, it will come out in the end.
I used to have nightmare neighbours, the BH swore they were coming in through the loft dividing wall -sent me up there to check, and they weren't.
:o

it would be a sad day when we bring children up not to have complete trust in the ones who should be responsible for their care and welfare.

Regardless how much money is pumped into the system or how many staff are employed, it will never be possible to forsee or supervise families sufficiently to stop all such cases as this occuring.

Some have occured under circumstances no one would have thought likely or amongst families no one would have believed were at risk.
In addition many kids from problem families have gone on to make good.

Short of supervising every family for 24 hrs a day, an impossible task, the ppl. involved can do little more than rely on their own judgement and even with the best will in the world, it is inevitable that in many cases they will get it wrong.

Unfortunately most of the cases we see of abuse (in education) are by people they know - whether it be family or family friends - it makes you wonder how these people tick xxx

It is indeed. And despite some posters' need to call whole groups of people "scum" and "slum people" because they live in poverty, child abuse is very much an equal opportunity sort of crime, just like domestic violence between adult partners. It crosses all income levels. Just like racism - some scream racist comments on a tram, and some laughingly trot them out over sherry at the smart cocktail party - but it's still the same thing. Some of the nastiest crimes against children happen in the "nicest" places and nobody even realizes it because of their stereotypical assumptions.

If nobody realises it how can anyone know if it exists?

I agree that people who live in poverty are not scum, there are lots of people who are quite lacking in material things, but still have pride in themselves and make the best of things.

I did however notice from the ariel shots of the housing estate on sky news that the gardens of the houses were unkempt and in some cases nothing more than rubbish dumps.

That to me shows a laziness and lack of standards, because the houses could no way be described as slums, and despite the residents having a front and rear garden, hardly any of them, felt the need to maintain their own gardens.

I suppose a high number of residents are on benefits and there would be qute a few able bodied unemployed men amongst them, surley out of their non busy day they could at least find the time to keep their own garden in order.

Precisely, in many cases it's impossible for anyone outside the particular household to know.

I think he means that people just presume it happens in the lower classes of society when actually its as rife in the upper classes as well - but that would obviously be swept under the carpet as we couldnt possibly think bad of the big people could we :( xxx

When a child is murdered it comes out whatever the social class involved, and as we are talking about a murder, how could it possibly be swept under the carpet?

Exactly SG. It appears to be easy to jump from the non-prosperous-middle-class appearance of the people's gardens to the assumption of heinous crimes, and equally possible to assume from well-kept lawns, shiny cars, and good manners that the crimes and abuses don't happen.

Quite often the murder is the end of a line, the end of a chain of abuse that may well have been going on for some time.
